I have a 1974 vega gt with a small block 305. I got the motor from a junkjard i used to work for. It has a mild cam, rollar rockers, MSD, new 650 edl., i rolled new rod and crank beraings did the whole tune uo. The car will not idle at all when the idle is at 1,000 or so it tends to load up and back fire. ive re-timed it a number of times and hasnt fixed the problem, i even check to see if it jumped a tooth but its dead on.The car seems to run better with the vacume adv. pluged off on both the carb and dist. but still wont idle, and im getting valve tap. i need help, i wanna race on new years.

no vacume leaks and to tell you the truth i couldnt tell you. i loosened the rockers a bit and i could get it to idle at about 1,600 rpm but still the idle on the side was almost all the way tight. im going to put a holley 450 on it tomorrow.

Lower the CFM-- you will also probably find your timing is too advanced too. Check for leaks around the carb base and the manifold too-- you can do it by spraying Windex around the area and see if the engine speed changes... MC

Have you checked the vacuum advance to see if it is even working? Is it sucking air at the advance? What did you time it at? I agree it sounds like a vacuum leak.

I had a problem that sounded just the same and found the back two barrels not closing fully.Go into back two barrels with a screw driver and push down on rear blades.

If you find out your back buttereflys are not closeing, remove the carb. look on the bottom side of base plate driver side of carb. You will find a adustment screw for idle on back butterflys, back off on this screw it should help.

i bought a new 500 cfm and finally it will idle at 1,200 rpm. i think i need to replace the valve springs because they are stickin and they tap the piston. Getting close to suckin a valve

Geez, 1200 is choke-on FAST idle speed! Should idle at around 650 normally, even with a mild cam. At 1200 my 305 sqawks the tires when I put in gear! Mine's stock inside, but runs fine with either the 600 or 500CFM Edl. & a 1" thk. 4-hole spacer.

Sounds like vaccum problem alright.

Are you running an open plenum spacer?

Mild cam?......I just read an article about how the roller rockers (1.52ratio) where actually hitting the spring retainers on the inside. The people writing the piece were told by the manufacturers to "grind" a little material off the rockers? They did. everything was KOOL. And that was with a stock GM cam. Did you just install the rockers?....But generally speaking, a vacumn leak will cause an engine NOT to idle. Get a spray can of starting fluid can check along intake,,,,that would be a start. Seems like 1200 RPMs is way way too much?.......Let me guess.. T?....R?....O?.......UBLE? is that it Shine?

OK, I did some testing on a old motor to create the high idle problem, fooled with vacumn etc. easier to solve than cause, then it hits me after the reread, junkyard motor! went and got rerefined oil, thats what they use I'm sure now!, pouring this stuff in I see all these little micro balloons, like tiny bubbles and they don't go away, the linear motion accelerator[lifter/ rod]{ this won't happen with solids.} has a build up of balloons and they pop!! kinetic energy transferred through the fulcrum pushes the linear motion decelerator into an area its never been before , so tulips stick 3 or 4 thou. and a high idle occurs. added amSTPol getting quieter by the minute, solved!make sense now? had fun with this, wishing you all the best !! there ya go vega guy.

If you remove the muffler bearings the idle will drop 4 degrees below zero

'tis a simple problem y'all have overlooked.....

the vehicle obviously does not have the 1.21 gigawatts at the ignition switch, required to properly engage the flux capicator. This, coupled with the additional load of the solar powered dog polisher will lead to a high idle issue, as well as an ineffictive connection between the steering wheele & the drivers seat.
