Get off the trailer and drive

I live in an area where the weather may be cold and (not good) to take the street rod out and sometimes no place to go. So the car sets for several weeks at a time. How long before the gas begins to turn to varnish and gum things up?

Hi Jerry

In all my gas powered tools including my 32 Chev, when they are stored for any period of time I put a fuel stabilizer in the gas tank. This generally holds the condition of the fuel for six months. I think that with todays fuels they are pretty stabil but to be on the safe side I would put in anyway, does not harm anything to my knowledge.

Gerry

Put in Sta-bil, fill the tank and let it run for five minutes as it says on the bottle. You are good for all winter then. Have used it for years in my '34 Ford, it always starts right up in the spring. Runs good too!

I've heard it starts to deteriorate after 60 days and I believe it. Had some stored gas for my mower that I used which gummed up the carbureator causing it to run with almost no power. Fortunately I was able to run carbureator cleaner through it which returned it to normal. I've been using Stabil in my cars that sit for long periods during the winter with no adverse effects.

Gosh guys, I never do anything to the gas in the "good cars" all winter and both start up like champs in the spring....must be lucky. Maybe it helps that they are in a heated garage??

Maybe the gas in your "Good" cars doesn't stay in the tank all winter.

I store cars 6 months out of the year and have been doing it since I was 16 years old. I have never put anything in my gas tank but gas, and have never had any issues at all, ever. Cold storage, heated storage, or otherwise. In my opinion the BEST thing you can do is fill your tank to the top before storing it, as alot of the "gas related" problems people complain about is actually water in their gas, from all the condensation that takes place in the springtime in an unheated garage... any portion of the tank not filled with gas "sweats" and of course that water ends up in the gas. If the tank is filled this isn't a problem, and when you get your car out in the spring you have a full tank to go cruising with. Heck, I know of cars that have sat for upwards of 5 years and fired right up with a fresh battery. I know that's pushing it, but winter storage has never caused me any problems related to "bad gas".... now if we're talkin' Mexican food, thats a totally different story....

If properly trained, it can sit for almost 6 months. Getting it to roll over, or fetch is another story......

never had a problem. my tractor sets for months and usually all winter. fires right up. have had one set for over 2 years . not that i like old fuel but as long as it does not evaporate down to varnish it should be ok. over winter should not be a problem. if worried just use stabil additive.

My rods, boats, tractor, lawn mowers, jet ski all sit from November thru April for the past 51 years...never had a problem, never used stabilizer. Some times the 30 foot cruizer sits for 9 months. Our 32 5w sat 8 years and fired.

Keep kroozen, Jim
