I am building a 1930 Model A pickup streetrod as a retirement project. I have a Ford 8 " rear end in my 1930 Model A pickup … I think it is a late model with the extra ribbed housing (WCZ-V1). It has a rubbing noise like when you have a bent bicycle wheel and it hits the fork. It does it under load, but not when I put the trans in neutral. Tapping the brake makes no difference. Does this make sense? What do you think it might be? I have pulled the third member and ring gear looks good and unit looks like it might be rebuilt. Help?

Where is a good source of parts if I have to replace the third member? Thanks

Could this sound be coming from the axle bearings? Just thinking if you have looked at the pattern on the ring gear and it doesn't go away tapping the brakes...it is a thought.

Garden hose/heater hose.......acts like a doctors stethascope. But now that is is apart, check items like the rodders above suggested.

No problems, no fun with street rods.

Sure its in the rear? With trans in neutral the drive shaft and rear are still rolling but the engine rpms and trans have slowed. Noises have a way of traveling.

I had a similar noise that drove me nuts, changed the struts on the back and it still was there. It turned out one rear tire went out of round. Some steel belts let go and the tire went a bit out of round andmade that rubbing sound. Hope this helps! Roadgent61

Can you simulate or hear the noise by running it with the rear wheels jacked up off the ground? If so, you should be able to find it with a stethoscope.

I gave up on trying to figure out what the problem was and put in a good third member from a 1978 Granada. No problem now.
