I quit 18years ago-smoking 31/2 packs a day. Cant stand the smell anymore and sure cant afford it. Why do these guys have a nice car and smoke in it?Looked at a car for Reborn the other day and it smelled like an ashtray and had burn marks in a somewhat nice interior. I know its their rite but why dont they just take a torch to them and call them 'art'.

I quit 19 years ago. Wife stills smokes but only outside. Rarely smokes in the car. She tries to quit but is not ready. Support her when she tries.

Work environment still allows smoking--doesn't bother me too much--sometimes it does--just walk away.

One thing I did when I quit was to put $3.00 a day in a coffee can(cost of cigarettes then) upped it to $4.00 a day a few years later. Still do it to this day(be surprised how much money accumulates). Pays for all our weekend trips to car shows. Have never really missed the money. But is nice to have it now.

Grandma died of cancer at 62- she smoked almost all of her adult life, Father smoked for 49 years and has now had 2 cancer scares and tore up all his arteries causing ruptures- he has been smoke free for over 3 years, I smoked from age 15-29- wanted to quit before I turned 30 and I did. I hate the smell of it now and I don't miss it. I would like to lose the weight it added, but my doc said better fat and happy than smokey and dead.

My dad died from lung disease and kidney failure in 1969. At the time I was off cigs for serveral years, but I went back to it. Then I got the patch in 1992 after I realized that at the rate I was going (2 packs/day) I would be poor or wouldn't live long enough to see my 4 year old daughter grow up. 4 weeks on the patch was all it took, haven't had a cig since July 1992. Haven't been able to stand the smell since. Wish all the restaurants were smoke free.

Most manufacturers have alredy removed the lighters from cars, and many ashtrays have become coin holders. Never let anyone use tobaccy in any of my cars. Don't even like the smell on their clothes.

Cancer is a strange beast. A good friend from work had quit smoking for over 25 years yet he came down a couple of years ago with cancer in the lungs, liver and brain. After a year of chemicals he nearly beat it, but then they found a re-occurence in his lung and brain. He was dead three months later. Had yet turned 60. Doctor told him that they used to think if you were smoke free fro 20 years you would be a survivor. Now they think it may take 30 years.

*Just a note for our smoking discussion....Springfield is smoke free. No smoking in restaurants, offices, banks, bars or anywhere. Should have heard them yell about that. By the time we have the show, all of Illinois will have joined us so if you come to Illinois in 2008 you will need to smoke outside only. Sorry for those who are still hooked.

Tammy, New Mexico has done the same thing.. I'm pretty used to being treated like a leper.. The good news is I'm down to less than a pack a day and still dropping.. The wife is 6mo smoke free now and has become a total stranger.. Major personality changes there... Guys, I got most of my drinkin out of the way before I turned 21. Way back when my body could handle it.. A 12pack lasts me close to a year now..

I have always been the odd one. I smoked, but a pack of cigarettes would last five days to a week. About three cigarettes a day was all I wanted. Just to light one up they tasted awful. But after a meal they were so good. In the army I gave away more then I smoked. I smoked that way from 21 to 31. Stopped for years than discovered cherry blend little cigars. They were really good. Never inhaled them though. Then when our daughter was born I decided to quit. Wasn't going to let that baby breathe smoke. So I haven't smoked anything in 27 yrs. Yeah, Im like the rest of you I can't stand the smell now.
Same with beer. I never drank one until I was 23. I might drink one a week. Then I usually can't finish it. It fills me up. If I don't have the taste for it, I don't like the taste.
Got a funny story. When my wife and I were dating we went to a party at a couple's house she worked with. This guy drank beer constantly. He kept asking me every two minutes if I wanted a beer. I kept saying I didn't want one. He wouldn't leave me alone. Finally I said, "Yes, get me that damn beer so you will leave me alone!" He went away way with his tail between his legs and brought me a beer. He left me alone the rest of the evening. I can't stand people who keep bugging me. I loose it.

Never drank, never smoked, never wanted to. All of my buddies went through it, but it just never interested me. I was too busy chasing girls and working on cars... and spending beer and smoke money on girls and cars.

My secretary smokes. Whatever it is that she's smoking smells horrible... it's the only bad thing I can say about her! Besides that she's a great employee!

39 YEARS OF SMOKING AND I COULD FEEL THE SHORTNESS OF BREATH STARTING-HAD NEVER BEEN ABLE TO QUIT. EVEN AS EACH PARENT WENT WITH EMPHEZEMA I STILL COULDN'T STOP. MY WIFE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE LAST YEAR AND SHE COULDN'T STOP SMOKING EITHER.I KNEW SHE MEANT MORE TO ME THAN ANYTHING IN THE WORLD. THE DOCTOR SAID IT IS RARE A SPOUSE CAN STOP WHEN THE OTHER IS STILL SMOKING. SO THIS PAST MARCH WE BOTH STOPPED AND HAVEN'T HAD A PUFF BETWEEN US. IT HAS BEEN THE TOUGHEST THING WE HAVE EVER DONE. BE KIND TO THOSE WHO STILL SMOKE CUZ IT IS A TRUE ADDICTION AND A SILENT KILLER THAT SNEAKS UP ON YOU. I STILL LONG FOR A CIGARETTE ESP AFTER MEALS OR WHEN I'M STRESSED BUT SETTLE FOR A POPSICLE OR ANOTHER GLASS OF WINE. STILL HAVEN'T FOUND THE RIGHT SUBSTITUTE. BEFORE YOU JUDGE,REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS LIKE .FROM THIS POST FOR MOST IT IS ONLY THE THREAT OF DEATH OR DEATH ITSELF THAT CAN REALLY CURE THIS ADDICTION.

Smoked a pack a day before I went into the army at 21. Increased to 2-3 packs a day then and drank pretty heavily. Stuff was cheap in the service. Ran out of smokes on the airplane (you could smoke on planes then) on my way home the day I got discharged at 25. Figured it was a brand new life from that day on and I could make it the way I wanted. Haven't smoked since and only drink beer & wine now and not too much of that (well except in my garage wiith a bunch of gear heads tellin true stories about cars & girls - not necessarily in that order). You can't quit because you know you should. Gotta quit because you want to.

Smoked for 2 months in high school, thought it was cool. after 2 months, didn't like the taste or the feeling. Still will have a cigar now and then. Now as far as drinking.......................... I know i cannot compete with some of the professionals on this site. I was always amazed at the bodyshop guys I knew . They always kept a pint in their pockets. Take a swig and back to work. It must have washed the sanding dust down.

Agree with OGS41(threat of death) and 29 robert (Army). Played around with smoking and drinking until the Army said "I want you". Being 11b in the RVN and being hit only once and you're young and think you're indestructible. When back at base camp if I remember correctly a carton of cigs were $1.65. Became a heavy smoker and drinker, tapered off drinking after about 15 years but could not give up smoking until 1998. That's when I was treated for prostate cancer, pre-cancerous polyips removed from the colon and a knee operation (all in the same month)---finally decided I wasn't indestructible. Hardest thing I ever had to do--quit smoking but did it cold turkey. Like most other ex-smokers, can't stand the smell of them now and sure and the hell can't afford them.

I just quit a month ago and it's been quite a challange! I smoked about a pack a day. I'm now eating like a pirahna and I've gotten hooked on Tootsie roll pops. I don't plan to go back but it aint easy. I just keep reminding myself of the people I've lost along the way and seeing a friend the other day who informed me he had emphysema.

I don't feel any better, but I never felt bad when I smoked. My girlfriend quit and there was going to be no peace until I did. I hope they start stinkin soon cause now they smell like a steak on the barbeque.

I used that pill Chantix and it worked for me. I tried cold turkey but everyone encouraged me to start again before somebody got hurt.

I quit drinkin when they stopped the smoking in bars here about 2 years ago. That was easy cause I only liked too drink in a bar.

Ofatboy2,

just hang in there, we're pulling for you. There's nothing easy about quitting smoking. I don't know if I should tell you this or not but here goes, it took about a year for me to get over the craving for a smoke. If you should happen to slip just keep trying and you'll make it when you're good and ready.

I agree with Ofatboy2, it's been 1 month now and yes I do miss it. A pack a day now only a cuban cigar now and again. My wife has had no trouble with quiting at the same time. After 43 years of smoking it's one of the hardest things I have done. I guess it's not to bad for my wife. She quit smoking for 13 years and went back to it for 10 and now is quiting with me. Maybe it's easier for her. Got to try and stick with it. Already put an inch on the mid section, can't stop eating. I eat more than I ever smoked. Go figure!! I can't afford to buy new clothes and parts for the car at the same time, I guess I could go without clothes.

I never got the habit. Peer pressure made me try it a couple of times, but didn't like the taste it left in my mouth. Both my parents smoked , 2 to 3 packs a day, each. I remember one day, my Dad was choking on a cigarette he was smoking at the kitchen table. As I entered the room and in a cloud of smoke, my dad said to me " I hope you never get hooked on these DAMN things ". Thanks to that day, I never did.

I am thankful that I had the strength and have never put a cigarette to my mouth. It always repulsed me and now with cancer in the family I am working on my son to quit permanently. He has been off of them now for 3 months and counting after a bet with my sister. She still hasn't been able to quit. It must be tough so I am glad that I never got hooked.

folks i will be 50 in a few day's and never smoked i do like a cigar once in awhile but like president clinton once said i didn.t inhale it . my wife is 39 and smoked since she was 13 . her father a monthe before his 60th birthday came down with lung cancer untreatable . i will never forget the day we put together a surprise birthday party for him and a week or so before it the wife asked her dad what would you want the most for your big 60th birthday . he looked straight into her eye's and asked her not to put her family through what i put you kids through with this cancer and all the doctors visits . he made it to his party but died months later . the wife still smokes . the point is i see how hard it is for you folks that do smoke to stop . here in ny there is no smokeing in bars stores or food resturants . at first i was angry for ny being able to tell people when and where they can smoke .i felt it was a right folks had now when i go out to dinner my food taste like it should and when i have a beer at the clubs it doesn't taste like a ash tray . i will pray that all that are trying to stop keep up the good work . but remember it's the family that is left behind that continues to suffer good luck and happy holidays bob in ny

Tommy and Ofatboy2, keep up the good work, but if you need to go get a nicotine patch. It will create a taste in your mouth the first time you light up that will make you not do it again. Plus it's a 4 week course to freedom. But I do agree it is very difficult to get the past the habits like smoking and driving or smoking and talking on the phone (my two toughies), but it is worth it. Also make every attempt to curtail the eating. I know it's hard to do, but you really don't want to find out in three years that you're a smoke free diabetic.

I'm pretty sure I'm over the hump. I've tried to quit before and I never got this far. The cravings come and go quickly and are getting easier to get past.

Now I blame my addiction on the cigarette compannys. I watch videos on you tube that have the smoke commercials from the 50's and 60's and I get pissed. I still remember the Winston commercial that the Flintstones did where Fred had the stone Zippo that rubbed 2 sticks together. They also advertised on the Beverly Hillbillies and a bunch of other shows that I watched as a kid. The rest of the commercials touted how good cigarettes were for you with doctors pointing out what they smoke. I didn't stand a chance at that age. My mother smoked and my sisters smoked and my grandparents smoked.

I'm hoping the eating thing will pass over time, and I could use a few pounds as I've been skinny all my life.

Tommy stay in touch with this I got a feeling we'll both be non smokers before we know it.
