MY '40 FORD HAS (POWER) DISC BRAKES ON ALL FOUR CORNERS. OCCAISONALLY AT LOW SPEED ONE OF THE CALIPERS SEEMS TO GRAB. IT DOESN'T CAUSE THE CAR TO PULL OR LOCKUP, OCCURS RANDOMLY, BUT IS LOUD (AND ANNOYING). I HAVE NOT FOUND ANYTHING OBVIOUS, CAN'T SEEM TO DUPLICATE THE CONDITION WHEN SOMEONE'S HANDY TO WALK ALONG SIDE AND AT LEAST NAIL DOWN WHICH CORNER. ANY SUGGESTIONS? THANX

Several things come to mind. First, is there anti-squeal backing on the pads. This is usually red RTV. Second, baring a hose that is old and maybe closing up I would take the pads an bevel the leading edge so they don't grab and chatter.

If its grabing as you say ,you said it was not pulling to one side ,then that will elimate the 2 front ones, get on a dirt road an see which rear is grabing, will more than likely b the oppisite one not working properly, but like Willys said check those hoses.

AL: IT'S A WESCOTT BODY ('39 WITH FULL TRUNK, OR '40 WITH NO BACK SEAT?). WHY DON'T YOU BUY IT AND I'LL HELP YOU FIND THE GRABBING BRAKE. THANX, STEVE

BACK TO THE BRAKES; I CAN'T PREDICT WHEN IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN. MAKES IT TOUGH TO CHASE.

could be a bad caliper sometimes the fiber pistons get hot and swell causing them to bind. if it has the steel pistons they usually dont bind . maybe go drive it a little while. come back and squirt the calipers with water and cool them off see if it binds

Sounds like it could also be a bearing issue...

AT LOW SPEED ONE OF THE CALIPERS SEEMS TO GRAB.(That tells me there is some slight resistance) IT DOESN'T CAUSE THE CAR TO PULL OR LOCKUP, OCCURS RANDOMLY, BUT IS LOUD (AND ANNOYING). I HAVE NOT FOUND ANYTHING OBVIOUS, CAN'T SEEM TO DUPLICATE THE CONDITION.

One grinding noise you can get is from the bearing it self and/or the hub movement can force the rotor into the pad harder on one side of the assembly, If you can't duplicate it with the pedal theres some other pressure causing the friction........One other option is a small piece of gravel getting wedged but that would be more constant.

One thing I do suggest with any odd brake noises or questions in general.... dismantle it all until you find the problem, It can really suck if you have to find it the hard way "on the road"

make sure the caliper is lubed first, then check bearings like leon suggested. these are the 2 most common problems.
