I have a 1954 Willys Aero coupe. It has 4 lug wheels and 9" drums. I can't afford to install a new front end under it at this point. The existing front end components are tight and in good shape. My question is this. I want to change to a 5 lug pattern without using adapter plates. Is it feasible to install later model 5 lug drums and backing plates on my existing spindles and just get the proper bearings? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the response. I have considered doing what you suggested, but I am changing out the rear end and putting a 350 crate engine and 4 speed in the car. I thought it would be good to go to some bigger brakes if I was going to change anything at all. I didn't know if it was possible to re-drill some backing plates and get the size bearings needed and go to something larger.

If everything up front is good and tight, the easiest and cheapest way would be to have your hubs and drums redrilled for the 5 bolt pattern of your choice by a "Quality" machine shop. Do the back axles and drums at the same time.
