I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH FORD REAR ENDS. I AM BUILDING A STREET ROD AND HAVE GOTTEN A 9" FORD REAR END AND HAD IT NARROWED. I HAVE PURCHASED A 3:30 GEAR FOR IT. I HAVE BEEN ASKED WHY I DIDN'T GO WITH A POSI-TRACTION REAR END. HOW DO I CONVERT THE REAR END TO POSI-TRACTION. NEED A LESSON.

Thanks for the advice, guys. To answer Willys33, yes, I already have my axles. They are 31 spline units that came with the rear end when I ordered it (per your advice as a matter of fact). I really don't see the need for posi-traction. You know how it goes. Everyone you talk to has an opinion. If it were up to some of the people I have talked to, they would have me building a 1,000 h.p. machine that could hardly be driven. After all, it's my money they are spending, not theirs.

To me the name of the game is driveability. A lot of these high HP streetrods can't be driven from the motel to the fairgrounds without overheating. I've had cars that took the fun out of streetrodding due to running hot. I'll take a cooling running crate motor for a driver over a thumper anyday. If your intentions are the 1/4, thats another story.

ptracs are not all their made up to be. for a streetrod i would spend my money elsewhere. if you hit the loud pedal with a standard rearend you break lose a tire and make smoke and noise. hit a ptrac and both tires are loose...your outa control.

Go to your local rearend shop and they can set you up with the complete gearing assy, Dont try to convert what you have you will have problems.

Get a trac-loc (fords posi) ring gear carrier from a ford truck (31 splines)..

mount your ring gear on it and install in your center section. There's nothing wrong with trac-loc on the street...

Make sure that the gears you got are what you want. If you are running an overdrive unit then 3.50 is as low as you should go. I have a slide rule that gives RPM and speed with ratio/tire size input. Very handy for planning BEFORE spending money. Go to swap meets and zero in on a posi unit. You don't need the nogular (sp) unit but get a 31 spline then have someone that does it all the time overhaul it and put the gears you want in it. Do you have the axles yet?
