OK guy's I want to replace my 350 trans with a 200 for the overdrive. I know that Phoenix is an advertiser on this site & is recomended by Tammy as well as a few others. Shine also has his guy down there in TX & likes the 200 also. So my question is WHO HAS THE BEST

for the buck & application. I have a 56 chevy with a mild 350 that is putting out about 300 hp & will never see the strip BUT I do like to get into it from time to time. I'm also up in the frozen north of Canada on Vancouver Island so will probably have to order from the States as I cannot find anyone here on the west coast of Canada that seems to belive in them as a lot of you guys & (Shine) for one do. Price is not the main concern, A good product is. I'm sorry for the long ramble but you guys have helped in the past & I appreciate ALL your expert knowlege & input.

The guys that trash talk the 200 4R, 700R4 and you might as well add Ford's AOD in there as well, have never built one. Out of the box, they all had their issues...some were pretty bad. It's the rebuild & upgrade, the "Shift Kit" or "Problem Solver Kit" and the knowledge gained by the builders over the years that make'em work. Remember, TH350 had loads of problems when they came out as did Slim Jims and Hydromatics. Then everyone figured them out. Having a trans that's Dyno tested before you get it is a plus. Much better than shelling out the big bucks only to find out that it needs to be pulled and shipped back. Check in the warranty to see how they deal with a "come back" and or failure. ALSO, and this is important, make sure that you used the Lokar Throttle Pressure Cable and linkage.

See my comments in the "Extreme Makeover" article about the 2004R from Phoenix Transmission Products.... I have about the same engine and trans as you do... the tranny was an easy replacement....I'm running (at the moment) a 2:73 gear.... yeah I know Bonneville right.... before the 2004R switch the car wouldn't get out of it's own way.... now it will jump sideways off the line and light up the tire (no posi).... the guy's at Phoenix know what they are talking about and they dyno test your tranny before it's shipped.... last point.... they SUPPORT this site so please consider them and give them a call.... it is a painless swap!!!!

I would love to have the ability to add a 200 4R or any good ratio 4 speed tranny. Having a great gear in town with the standard 350TH or 400TH means you putt along on the highway and I am getting pretty tired of that. Believe me if I could afford it a 4 speed tranny would be on my Christmas list. I just don't think Santa has room in his sleigh right now. :-)

find a trans man local that will work with you. depending on the car sometimes you have to tune the trans. changing governor and springs is usually required because of weight difference . if you can find someone who builds up trans for racing he can do the mods. shipping is insane on transmissions. i have used 200's since 91 . the 56 210 i'm about to do will be a 3 deuce 350 with a neck breaker 200.

Gettin my 200's done locally-

Built to my specs for right @ $650 with convertor and no core.

I use the Bowtie overdrive tv cable setup and they work real sweet.

Itis soooo much nicer to drive your car, on the highway, with an OD init. You don't beat the crap out of the car so much and many of those nasty vibes go away.

i will use a toggle switch on the 56 for lock up this time. i just like having a 4 speed around town but dont care for the lock up unless on the hwy. unlike the 700 you can run the 200 without lock up .

Hey Don, Would you please share that transmission source with us. Also, isn't the length of the 200 4R from the front of the bellhousing back to the trans mount shorter than on the TH350's? If so, what's the best way to accomodate that if your trans crossmember is already in place?

Actually the 2004R trans mount from the front of the bellhousing is longer than the 350 trans mount distance. The 2004R is 26 3/4" from the front of the bellhousing to the trans mount and the short 350 length is 20 3/8". The overall length of the 2004R is 27 3/4" and the short 350 is 27 5/8".

my Roadster Shop chassis had a bolt in tranny mount that, when reversed, worked out almost perfectly.... if you're not so lucky it's not rocket science to redo the mount.... if you have an after market chassis you may be able to contact the builder for the 2004R trans mount....I was able to use the same driveshaft with the 2004R that I had behind the 350....

You're absolutely right Big Al. Sometimes I feel like opening my head up to see if there are any brain cells left! I went out and looked at my chassis this AM and sure enough. All I have to do is spin the trans mounting plate around 180 degrees. Thanks for the tips guys. Don had recommended the 200 4R to me months ago, and now it's time to find my engine & trans. If I can get him to share the trans source, that should save me some bucks.
