I think the 48 had a vent door on the side of the cowl. Don't know if the 49 did or not. (Anybody know for sure?)
Door handles are not different and they both had the side vent.
A '48 will have the gas tank under the bed with a filler through the passenger side bed. In 1949 the gas tank was moved to the cab with the filler just behind the door. The 1948 and early '49 models had hood emblems that said "CHEVROLET" and "THRIFTMASTER" this changed in late 1949 to "CHEVROLET" with the series designation (3100, 3600, 3800, etc.).
Door handles didn't change until 1952 when they went from turn down to the push button type. The side cowl vent was on 1947 to 1950 so '48 and '49 would both have them. 1951 was the first year without the side vent.
Most of the parts for 1947 to 1953 advanced design trucks were interchangable. I've seen quite a mix of parts on trucks so it can be hard to tell them apart without looking at the vin.
Also the metal bars that hold in the headliner are different, I believe the 48 has 2 separate pieces for a headliner while the 49 uses 1. vent windows and pushbutton door handles didn't appear until 51
Still driving the wife's car, cause I am slow.

Yes, the headliner center bow changed in 1949 to a floating type, not screwed to the roof as it had been. Vent windows appeared in '51 but door handles didn't change until '52. 1951 was the only year with vent windows and turn down door handles.
