A freind is building a 38 Chrysler and wants to keep it all mopar. He put a Dakota frontend in but had to narrow it 4 inches, He is now concernded about narrowing the rack. He thinks he will get a lot of bump steer. I don't know of any one who has done this. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

probably so. the pivot of the lower control arm and the pivot of the tie rods has to be the same or you get bump steer. no way i know of to narrow a rack. best bet would be a half rack maybe.

might call Fatman as they manufacture a narrow rack for thier Anglia front suspensions that is much smaller than any other I know of. Other choices would also NOT be Mopar.

There is a company called Manvel I believe and they will custom make you rack to your application. I'll see if I can find a link.

Someone here might know where it is if I can't find it

The rack can be shortened but it's not for the weak of heart. Shine is correct about the position of the lower control arm. Once that is determined, then you must disassemble the rack then take the toothed portion (rack) to a machinest and tell him how much to cut from the LONG end (no teeth) and rethread. The material is special so do NOT try to weld on it or heat it in any way.. Once you have the rack shortened then you can cut the tube and and either reweld or, if you got it apart by pulling the pins then just reassemble the way it came apart. Did it on the Willys and works fine. Can't be done on a power rack.

I'm certainly no expert, but if the rack is narrowed and the Ackerman Principal adhered to properly, would it still be an issue?

Ackerman, the ole wagoneer basicly said that the inside wheel must turn sharper than the outside wheel. By narrowing the track of the front end it doesn't have any effect on the Ackerman Principal at all as long as the geomertry stays the same (i.e. caster, camber).

Actually its a little more scientific than that. It has to do with the steering arms of the spindles in relation to the center of the rear end. By aligning correctly, the Ackerman Principal is achieved. I don't know if this would make any difference in bump steer or not though. Just my .02 and food for thought.

Thanks for the input. I contacted my freind today and he is going to log in and check all the responses. He is doing a good job on his Crysler. Its a 38 coupe and a monster. I think it has 3 or 4 body trunk. Its in good shape and will make a nice rod. Thanks again.
