I agree, don't try to piece a system together. I've had a complete Air Ride Technologies system and even though they are considered very good, they aren't without their problems. The electronics are very sensitive and not as precise as you would expect. I was constantly fusing with the controls trying to find acceptable ride heights. It was great dumping it in the weeds at a show but otherwise a pain. My current car has coil overs and I'm thankful for that.

the air pump has to ground to batt. it can not be in the loop or it will cause false readings in the sensors.

Bagged the rear of my roadster and was very easy and cheaper than coilovers!!! I used www.airliftcompany.com and the pump from Summit. My system was designed to hoist the rear if there were riders in the rumble seat. No tank, one small compressor...that's it!

I had air bags on a 39 Chevrolet.......they were a pain in the ass. I learned this............keep it simple. Bags always leaked, the comperssor ended up starting a fire.

The ride quality was okay once I found an acceptable ride height. I could never get it to find preset heights the same way every time. Constantly had to mess with it. Seems like one corner was either too high or too low. For me, if you've got a car you want to drive, set it up as low as you can and still have a decent ride. My car is really low with dropped spindles and coilovers. Any lower for me and I'd loose the ride and wouldn't be able to go over most driveways. If I was doing a show car again and didn't intend to drive much, I'd probably bag it.

Jim .good you brought this up, I'm thinking about the same thing ..air bags ,I have to revamp lower A arm. shock waves, revamp lower A arm and spring hat. a friend I was following blew a air line ,now were on the ground 3/8 clearance on ifs crossmember, good light show.bad install of lines ,don't think so ,we tried to cover all bases ,rubber hose wrap on any area's we thought might rub,our Dot line farted ,pass side under cab ,close to air comp, we can't get under to see what the heck, tow truck. not a good thing.I looked at your picts. looks to me you'r wheel track is to wide to drop it, the fat guys and tci say 56 1/2 for your truck .so ,to build in a fail safe snubber you won't be able to weed it ,I would love to put mine in the weeds ,don't need the workout agian with this stuck at the side of the road thing.my brand name ifs has sagged on me ,Im looking at speedy bills m2 bolt in coil over useing same A arms and hats .I hope we get some good feed back on this.I need help deciding also.I have over 60,000 miles on my ride don't need hassles...

First off, go with a complete kit such as Air Ride Technology. I had the original RidePro e system and had many problems with it, such as inacurate pressure readings and ride heights. That system is gone--junk as far as I'm concerned. Air Ride doesn't even offer it anymore. I now have the new LevelPro e2 which works pretty well but I have had a few problems. The old system had impedance based sensors with all kinds of grounding problems but the new system has voltage based sensors and voltage based height sensors which avoid the EMI interference and grounding problems. I had one computer bite the dust and two tank pressure sensors go bad. I had the tank sensor mounted in the discharge line where the orginal pressure switch was located in the orginal RidePro system which we believe is the problem----heat, getting too hot and going bad. The new system doesn't use a pressure switch, the computer tells the compressor when to turn on. If you buy their new kit the tank sensor is mounted in the tank but the problem is there is not a place to mount it in the old tank that I have. Anyway this time around I've mounted it in the valve block. As far as returning to ride height it has always been within 1/4" to 1/2" at all four corners, now the old system there was no telling where it would end up. I'm using ShockWaves on all four corners and the ride is much better than the Posies's leaf springs (rear) and the Mustang II coil springs that I ran at first. As far as getting the best ride, the Shockwaves and air springs have a ride height, you set it to that height and you can play with it about 1/2" either way and play with the adjustment of the shocks. This is not a show car, I've had it over 110 mph and it takes curves very well with sway bars front and rear. It's a fairly expensive system and is it worth it---it's still up in the air for me. One thing about Air Ride Tech is they'll help you out all they can. I've had this system about 2 years and they have sent me the replacement parts free of charge. Now you've heard of KISS--you have to make up your own mind on which way you want to go. Sorry about the length but I'm trying to let you know my experience with this system. I believe 1carguy had the orginal system which is no longer available, I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong. Oh yeah, since this is a driven car it is set up so that if there is a failure of any kind nothing will hit the ground and will still be drivable, may not be the best ride but won't be stuck on the side of the road.

37tin,

Thanks I think----not familiar with the term buetious but is sounds good.

Something I left out and found out the hard way is that if one of your Air Ride sensors reads 167 lbs. it's a bad sensor. They ought to tell you that in the paperwork that comes with the system.

Hey JIM636, I have a 53' 5-window bagged and I will never have another rod without bags. If done correctly, the ride is awesome. As long as you don't have to ride with more than 80lbs of pressure in the bags, the ride is smooth. there are many different options for setting your air ride up, I have a triangulated 4-link with big sleeve style bags on the rear and the front has tubular control arms with bags. I get great lift and ride.

Now looking at the wheels on your 40, the offset looks like they will rub on the side of the front fenders if you go too low! You might need to reconsider different wheels. Also to get the truck to its lowest point you will need dropped I-beams for the ranger frame depending on the year you used. The bags will only drop it somewhat low without the lowered beams/control arms... Also on the ranger frame you would need to relocated the radius arm brace and the transmission crossmember. It is alot of work on a ranger frame. I would almost suggest the factory frame with a bagged Mustang II setup for the front... Air Ride Tech, is good for the equipment but so are places like www.suicidedoors.com and airlift.com. It is well worth the money and time, so I say do it, but do it right! If you need any help or have questions let me know. Hope this all makes sense and helps!

Brad

37tin,

Looking at your PU brings back memories. In my teen years I had a '37 GMC PU with a 1958 Golden Commando motor (350 cu. in. with dual four barrels), 1957 Plymouth 3-speed trans and 1954 Dodge rear end under it. This was back in the 60's when Sat. nite street racing was going on hot and heavy. Had lots of good times back then---but then Viet Nam came along and there went the truck and me. Sold it to some rich kid who fixed it up real nice. Your truck looks a lot nicer than what I had back then (spray can primer for paint and blanket over seat)) but I sure had fun with it. Oh, I also got lot's of exercise walking, with 2-4's and no gas gage it went dry fast---hence the walk to get gas.
