One of the reasons I stay with this site is the other more knowledgeable members. I posted recently about a problem I was having with my alternator. I received some very good suggestions and tips for fixing the problem. Last night I was watching TV and received a call from another streetrodding.com member and he asked if I had fixed my problem and then went on to offer suggestions and trouble shooting tips to possibly pinpoint the solution. Some of you might say so what BUT this member called me from Boise Idaho and I live in upstate NY. To me, this is going above and beyond and I say "thank you" to JAWS. Its people like you that keep the street rodding hobby what it is today.

Has anyone else had trouble with chromed alternators? I was told a long time ago that chroming them causes extra heat build up inside the housing and fries the internal parts. This guy was adament about it. He said the raw or polished case would allow heat to escape and transfer into the air. Just a thought.

I've also heard that about chrome alternators. If you look in Tuff Stuff's catalog under FAQ'S you'll find this: "Does chrome plating on a alternator retain heat? We have tested our alternators through the most rigorous conditions and there is no proven fact that we have been able to produce, that will support this rumor".

Yet other sites will claim that they will retain more heat and I've also heard that about chrome water pumps. Who do you believe???

Even polished alternators have trouble cooling. For that matter anything polished or that has a smoothe surface will have a harder time transferring heat to air. The smoothe surface will actually have a layer of air as a "cushion" that insulates the surface from the air moving over it.. This is due to not having anything on the surface to cause turbulance so the cooler air moving across it can actually touch it to allow for heat transfer.

Take a look at the radiator core in your streetrod. Air must "bump" into the core surfaces as it passes through.

Got a polished intake that boils the gas out of the carb?.......

Tim, great post, its the people here that keep us coming back..........this site has more information and ideas for streetrodders than any where else. To me it is like kicking back in the garage with a bunch of buddies and shooting the breeze. Just a great feeling. To all the guys and gals who keep this place going and take the time to read and post.......Thanks.

I also have run chrome alternators and water pumps without any problems---polished also. Then there others who will swear that the chrome or polished part caused a problem.
