The chrome alternator on my 32 started acting up and the internal regulator failed. I was getting about 16+ volts with the car running. I bought a Delco replacement instead of having the chrome rebuilt. I then decided to rebuild the chrome one. I replaced the voltage regulator and put in new brushes. Put it back on the car and could not get it to charge more than 12 volts. I then put in a new rectifier and 3 bridge diode and reinstalled the alternator on the car. Same thing cannot get more than 12 volts when the car is running. Does this indicate the winding are bad or what??

Sounds like a bad regulator. I have seen this alot when the box is supposed to be one for a one wire(self exciting) regulator. Instead there is a regulator for a standard externally excited aletnator. They look the same and even have the same terminals. Easy to mistake.

Try this if you have not already, apply voltage to the excitation terminal on the regulator. If it charges then, then you will need to run a wire for that terminal from an ignition source and the other terminal will need to have a wire run to the battery terminal on the alternator for "sensing" volatge.

Had the same thing happen to me 5 years ago with a one wire Power Master alternator. In my case, the battery exploded and some wiring got a tad bit hot (read that as scorched). I replaced the regulator and converted from a one wire to a three wire, and it's been fine since.

Suggest you follow Brant's suggestion, he's the resident wiring expert.

Sorry, I should have added that this was already a 3 wire alternator. The first thing I did was install a new regulator and brush set and reinstall and I only had 12V. Then I added the 3 pole diode and rectifier and reinstalled and I still only have 12 volts.

Do you have ignition to the field terminal on the regulator?
