I was working on freshening up my 4L60 tranny this weekend for my build. I got into the valve body and had some weird wear/damage. Was wondering if it was typical or ominous of something really wrong. Where the seperator plate goes between the big 1-2 and 3-4 accumlator springs-- it is all dented up and gouged. It is gouged almost deep enough to go through the plate. Also the wear doesn't look "centered" where it should be.. maybe like one of the springs was cocked in at a strange angle. Has anyone experienced this? I have ordered a new plate from TransGo to remedy it.. but it is bothersome.

Pretty normal. Usually the springs are broken as well. You havethe right plan in replacing the separator plate.

Thanks Jaybird... I got a hardened one coming. I beefed up my TH400 and have never seen anything like this. The check ball holes were somewhat worn too-- so just a good precaution.

Mark,

I think that's why a lot of guys shy away from the 700r4 style tranny so much. I've heard they are prone to failure in this area even on everyday cars that have never had any abuse.

Yep... From what I can see, it looks like the 700R4 has certain issues, but I have also found there is a world of parts out there to "make them right." I really wanted the O/D due to the price of gas today. So I have done my research and got the upgrade parts needed to beef this puppy up. I was suprised to find this as the tranny was actually working perfectly fine! When I have a little time I will have to post a picture,,,,

Hey Jaybird you called it right!... one of the accumlator springs is broken off. That is why the jagged end was trying to bore a hole through the plate. Now the question is-- where did the other piece of the spring go?! It's GONE! Double weird.

EDIT-- I found it.. it was jammed up under the piece of the spring coil still on the piston.

Mark are you putting the Transgo shift kit in it too? They take real nice in the 700R4. I've been using the Vette servo's withthem. The competition servo's will crack yer windsheild.

Yes, got the shift kit, a new TCI boost valve, and larger pan. I haven't opened it yet but it is possible I already have the bigger servo. The inside looked good other than this accumulator valve damage (going to the stealership today for a new spring and seals). The oil was clean. I also converted the tailshaft to the TH400 style and recalibrated the VSS and driven gear for my setup and tire size. I should be good to go here shortly. It will be nice to say I have ONE aspect of my build done!
