The weather in Michigan has been kind to us rodders lately. Last Sunday night while driving my highboy the fuel was less than my distance to go. I pulled to the side of the road and called my brother to bring gas. While waiting a Police car pulled up and asked what was wrong I told him and in a couple of minutes he asked me for my licence. Then asked for insurance and regristration. I asked what was wrong and he said nothing. after about 20 minutes he told me that my paperwork was in order but that my plates were not registered to anything nor is my car, although the system shows the car belonging to me. My grey hair and good record got me off but was told to fix it. Not knowing what I had done bad enough, in a past life, to make me deal with the Sec. of State I called them. It seems that according to "T&R Section C page 64 Authentic and Historic plates are not maintained on the main system. " I was told that main system won't accept them because of duplicates and non conforming numbers. The police can verify ownership etc by calling an 24 hour number rather than useing their car computer. I now carry a copy of the note Sec sent me and hope to never need it. Jack

I have '34 Michigan plates on my '34 Ford. But I have never been pulled over and checked out. Thanks for the tip. I won't panic now if I get pulled over and told this. Yeah, I hope my good driving record, gray hair and good looks keep me out of trouble too! Lol! A young cop will probably think Im the original owner.

To follow up on this. So why does the state approve of the use of these original plates then don't keep a record of it? It is their fault not the car owner that they don't keep records of the numbers. Doesn't make sense to me. But our state is so screwed up now, it doesn't surprise me.

I have 1963 plates on my New Yorker, the state of Ohio will issue a vintage licenae,if the car is 20 years or over and you can display the old plate if you want. It is cross referenced to the antique plate . They told me if iam stopped to show them the registration for the vintage plate and also the vintage plate itself,(which i carry under the front seat). Be sure you tell the officer i am pulling the licence plate from under the seat...LOL

Jack, the EXACT same thing happened to a good friend of mine 2 weekends ago. I was very surprised. I have authentics on all of my cars. Had a wreck in the 33 two years ago--local cops never said a word about plate . I agree with moreorless---We followed all of the states guidelines and rules---gave them the required fees, now what? another way for JENIFER to create more revenues--giving rodders a hassle.

In Ohio we are issued Historic Plates. Then you apply for a registration to use the year/make plate. You can run it on your car, but must carry the Historic plate in the car somewhere (all the paperwork too). My buddy has been pulled over twice and worked over pretty good both times. Seems that the sheriffs involed were not familiar with the laws concerning year/make plates. Paperwork saved him both times.

Are you Michigan guys still painting your historic plates to match your cars?? I saw a few Michigan cars in a parking lot a few years back when attending GG Columbus, they all had re-painted their old plates to match the paint colors of their cars.

Here in PA if you used model year plates or painted your plates, you might end up parking and walking following a not so small fine issued by one our super troopers.
