 Say What...

Hello, we are looking for a project truck for my son, and came across a 1970 swb that needs restoring. Typical rust in the bed, rockers, cab corners etc. While inspecting the truck i was thrown off by the rear leafsprings. I thought all of these were the wishbone coil rears. I mentioned this to my uncle who was a parts dealer way back in the day and he thinks it could be a GMC frame under the body if his memory serves him correctly. does anybody know if a 1970 GMC swb frame had leafs in the rear. Should i be skeptical? Thanks in Advance.

63 to 72 had coils. most likely they have a 73 chassis. i would do some number checking.

Both your suspicion and Shine are right, something doesn't line up. That pickup should have coil in the rear... at least if it's a 1/2 ton. I don't know about 3/4 and one tons.

gmc used leafs, chevy trailing arms as standard, but chevs could be special ordered with the rear leaf setup. i've seen a few of them with the option over the years & wish i had changed mine over to leaf when i built it.

Steve is right, leaf's were an option on these trucks, usually tied in with a camper or heavy duty option

The only problem with leaf springs on these trucks is the lack of aftermarket items for rear leaf set ups. You may have to do a little more fabricating, but that is the only real drawback. If your son is looking for an older truck I might be willing to part with my 59 Chevy short/stepside project. Let me know.

the trick is researching what is interchangeable with later model trucks. most of the suspension & steering components will interchange between 63-87. i did a 65 for friend back in the spring & gave him an extra disc brake setup from an 85 model & everything bolted right up.

Ok thanks guys, i will swing by and try to locate the Vin # on the frame and compare to the vin on the cab and title..

Can someone direct me to the vin location on the frame. Is it the driver side, visible in front like shine says, im sure it is but will have to remove some gunk to get to it.

Thanks again.

Mike, since my son cant have my truck he's interested in the 67 - 72's Thanks.
