Am I correct when I think I can sand PPG's one part base with NO TIME LIMITS B-4 I clear?

Would I be wise to tint the sealer close to the color of the base coat?

2-4 coats of base?

Thanks,

dale,

first, if you tint the sealer, it will help with coverage. on average it will cut your color coats in half. as far as sanding basecoat, be careful depending on the color you use. for instance, some reds when wetsanded will show brown spots, & you stand a chance of high metallics like silver & gold showing sandscratches. the thing is, these usually don't appear until AFTER the clearcoat is applied. are you sanding due to the texture, or have you surpassed the timelimit to spray the clear? my advice if sanding would be to go no courser than 600 grit & add one more color coat to eliminate the problems above before clearing. you might even reduce that last coat a little extra so it will go on smoother, especially in these temps were having right now.

Ok, I will be spraying 79 Vette SOLID red.

I haven't started the painting process, just getting my ducks in order. I plan on PPG one part base, and I understand this product does NOT have a time limit B-4 clear must be applied????

After tinted sealer I was thinking 3-4 coats of base, wet sand, then 3 coats of clear. I may wet sand the clear the next day , and clear again.

Your comments are most welcome.

i shoot red over white or light grey. best to check the tech sheet as i know of no base coat without a time limit. dbu has a 24 hr window. after that it must be scuffed and recoated. i color sand and put a final coat of color on and then clear after flash time.

shine, so do you feel that WHITE makes the red BRIGHTER or just allows the red to cover easy? I was told that PPG base does NOT have a time limit, but it may be that they really meant to say that the time limit is such that one has plenty of time to do what they wish B-4 another base or B-4 clear.

So you seal with WHITE, SPRAY THE BASE, COLOR SAND THE BASE, THEN A FINAL BASE, THEN CLEAR AFTER BASE HAS FLASHED?

Thank You,

P.S. I used some DuPont clear in a spray can for a very small art project, and although it flowed well, it never dried to a real hard finish like a two part does. Have you used such and have you found the same results. I believe the can is marked, DOOR JAMB and TOUCH UP clear.

i use spi epoxy for sealer. it is harder to cover a dark base with red than white. white will give you a true shade and be more vibrant. i use spi universal clear. the #1 thing to remember is that flash time on base is the most important. any trapped solvents will cause solvent pop and dieback. i allow a min of 30 min for the first coat and add 10 min for each coat after. i wet sand the base and allow it to dry overnight. i apply a final coat of base and start clearing after 30 min. i do 3 coats of clear, wait 24 hrs and block with 600, 3 more coats and then cut and buff. spi buffs in 2 days or 2 months.

Shine, what's the advantage of using a single stage and then clearing it over using a bc/cc application?

i just prefer it to base coat. base is thin , much like lacquer. by using s/s i have less worry about pop and die back. it builds the finish starting with the first coat. once covered you have a good gloss to show anything you missed. i block with 600 and then recoat before clear. many painters activate their base , i just use s/s. i also do not use primers anymore. only epoxy.
