so i've got some questions about painting, how much primer should i buy to be able to cover my car. its a 17 foot bonneville. so how many coats of primer shouid i use. its not a totaly straight body, i'm goin to have to take out some dents and fix some rust. and how many coats of paint should i put on, and how much paint should i buy. i checked out some paint at napa the other day and i found what i want. but theres nothing added to it like hardener and shit like that. so i'm goin to need some mix ratios at some point in time, but i'll worry about that later. and what should the temp. be in my shop. i've got in floor heat so i can control the heat pretty good. so yea how much paint and primor should i buy, then i'm goin to need some hardener and a clear coat too so.

i dont know what paint your getting from napa but i would strongly advise going to a paint supply for your materials. any paint without hardner is junk. i use ppg colors and spi clears. as for amount it depends on color. you will use a gallon of primer at least.

Like Crazyhorse said talk to a paint supply store. I would seal the car if your leaving the paint on the car. Primer on that big of a car if your doing an all over no less than 2 gallons. By the time you block it a couple of times you will be surprised at how much material you will use. If your using a single stage I would buy 2 gallons. Coats? We dont count coats again like crazthorse said. Spray to a uniform coverage.

Buy good PPG or Dupont or House of Kolor materials and spend the money at a Auto Color supply shop. I would figure a minimum of 1 gal. of epoxy primer, and maybe 1 gallon of high build primer if you are going to block it a couple times. And I ball park figure 1 gallon of paint for a full size car, that is if I'm using a PPG DBC 1:1 mix - it gives you 2 sprayable gallons, plus you can save whatever is left in your gun that way.

From a amature, I have been painting for about 3 years. Just my own stuff. I have been going to a local auto paint store. They are very helpful. I only use PPG. Cost is not the biggest concern, just the quality. But they always tell me what I need and have never been wrong. I paint both single and 2 stage.

You've gotten a ton of great advice already. But also check with a company called Pivco.com about your painting materials. Great quality, fabulous customer service, and very affordable prices. They have some kits you can buy that include most everything you'll need for a quality paint job without all the first-time guesswork.
