I am looking at a 39 Ford to buy. It has a glass grill, I believe. How much would it cost to remove the old grill and install a new chrome grill and touch up the paint (if needed)? I want to know if this is a do-able job, i.e., < $1500 to install and retouch paint. Looking for a ballpark estimate.

I have been to the Coast to Coast web site to determine the price of the new grill, but they don't have any prices listed at all. I will call a east coast dealer to find out the cost of the new grill.

many thanks, Ken

Dont know about your car but I have a Downs 37 Ford and Downs charges 1600.00 for just the grille and I have had one on order since March 07 and still no grille, was promised 6 weeks.Tried rechromer and got estimetes from 1800--to--2200.00.I just gave up and am learning to like the painted grille.

Gene,

I bought one of their grills for my 37 also. I went through the same delay. It was $600 for the plain steel at the time. Made nice, but doesn't even fit their own body! Too wide at the top and the curve of the grill bars doesn't follow the curve of the hood: too fat. Look closely at their demo cars and the top bar is always ground to match the hood contour while the rest don't. MeanGene went through the same problems getting his to fit. We ended up piecutting the center, pinching them together and rewelding. I wouldn't be happy with the chromed one fitting that way!

Grilles....well we do some work that Down's sends our way, as they are in over their heads 99% of the time and just cant keep up. We build 32/33/34/37 grills and some one of a kind deals. We built those pictured below, and have others.

As for the 39 pictured, its a coast to coast car, nothing at all like an actual 39, but there are people who make grills for it. We can, but have not yet. We would be willing to build you one and install it and can do so quickly....but, price will depend on materials and finish Polished stainless will be out of your said budget.

Gentlemen, thanks for your input and discussion. The job is more pricey than I thought. That's what I was trying to find out.

So Mike (Vendattaautofab), approximately how much would a polished stainless grill be to fit the 39 Coast to Coast? Just your best estimate. I will not hold you to it. Thanks for enclosing the pics of the grills. Nice work!

Any idea who built that rod? I understand it was a Wisconsin builder. Car is in Mukego, WI.

Some one please tell me how to format separate paragraphs! A massive block of text is difficult to read. Oh, it worked. Reformatted later after initial post. Mystery solved -- I think.

thanks, Ken

Well, I would have to see one in person actually, but if I am not mistaken, the grille in place now is molded in the fiberglass correct? Is it "flat" with openings cut into it? Your looking for a Coast to Coast styled replacement for it out of polished Stainless? Give me a call at the shop or better yet email me.

You could get the car to me here in Michigan on the way to you in Virginia and have it setup just as you like.

Ken- Had a S. S. grille built for a 37 Coast to Coast I had a few years ago, by a buddy in Phoenix.

Then had it full polished.

I had around $2400 in it.

Good luck

Ken........when Tony commisioned OZE to build the first C2C, they used the '38 Ford/'39 Ford Standard concept. That grille was created for that '39 Roadster only. No other grille is a direct bolt-in. Have one custom built for big bucks or bite the bullet and bolt it in = Alan at C2C.
Our 22 year old Downs Sedan delivery has a Aluminum grille, covered with Imron.
Our '37 Wild Rod has a polished stainless grille
Our '37 Downs coupe has the optional polished stainless.
Bob's '37 Downs coupe is aluminum covered with White Diamond pearl.........
