I'm rebuilding my 1st sbc. It has 30 over bore ring's gap at .015 out of the box. Is that enough?? My Chilton's manuel says .010-.020 Top ring and .013-.025 2nd ring. If needed I will file them. What is the gap suppose to be. They are Sealed Power moly chrome.

.015 is real good, you do not want them too tight or they can break when the piston expands. Too loose and you will loose h.p. I use Moly rings for most all of my builds, with a good crosshatch on your walls they will seat upon break in, with in 20 minutes. Total seal rings work different, alot of money for a very small extra h.p.

1 important thing to measure is piston to side wall clearance. Alot of good machinists will not bore a block until they have the pistons to measure. And ALWAYS, ALWAYS plasti-gage every bearing dry. Its cheap insurance. Even if you check 1 or 2 caps and they look good at .0025 . I have had another journal turned down to far, say .005 and you will end up spinning a bearing and have to tear most of the whole damn motor apart. For the few extra minutes it takes. I promise it will be worth it.

Thank's for the quick reply. I did have the pistons at the machine shop when they bored the cylinders. I also plasti-gaged all rod's and main's. Rod's showed .0015, Main were .003. Seem's to be good The crank only got a polish and is standard size. Rod's were resized also.

Don't forget to slide the bearings into the saddles in a circular motion. Don't set them into the saddle in a simple pushing motion.

Thank you guy's, I put it together today. I won't be able to know how well for a while it's for my Model A project that I've just started. I'll keep it pre-oiled by running the oil pump at least once a week. Thank's again for the comments.
