You might as well check out the pickup I'm also doing for myself . But this one is a bitsa. As I have a 1936 ford sedan body sitting in the garage with no intentions of doing another sedan, I thought why not cut it up and make a pickup with sedan front sheet metal. I have all the peices of the puzzle. But a visit to the Ballarat Swap meet changed things. Looking for some good doors I came across a 1948 ford Pilot ( English ) body and chassis with mint doors. The deal was done. Chassis is now airbagged , 2 inch kickup over rearaxle ( factory ) 4 inches shorter than the 36 chassis at the rear ( factory ) Lexus aluminium V8 straight from donor front clip and 4 speed auto, ford 9 inch rear with 3.1 LSD gears , Torana front end, so far the front sheet metal on the cowl has to be changed to 36 sheetmetal to marry up the 36 front clip. I have a 1939 chev truck cabin back which is the same width and the roof is included which will work out OK blending it up with the roof of the sedan front. A lot of tweeking but thats what I like to do. Dave

Dave, cool looking project, but wouldn't it be easier to put in a radio than have someone play the drums in the back? Also my grandson would love to have dibs on that racer pedal car . good luck with the project, keep those pictures coming!

You can check a swag of Aussie rods on one of my websites @ www. dreaminghotrods.com
A lot of our tin now is coming from the US, but you can check out some Aussie body's in my website.
"Its not a bad camera at all".
You will notice the remains of a 1936 3 window body in one of my photo's on my home page here, when you find something like that I just had to grab it. This is now going to take place on the chassis instead of the pickup to be.
It came with roof, rear with bootlid and a sad left door. Thanks to ebay US I've managed to get the other door, both 1/4 panels.
But for now I'm back to getting the roadster on the road, "its glass" as you will see the motor is all done and rebuilt

Chiz, you've got one hell of a body with the 40 Utility. Thats what we call them in Australia, or ute is the term normally used. The pickup has the rear bed seperate from the cabin.

How the ute came about was a farmers wife wrote a letter to the managing director of Ford Australia, asking why can't they design a car that can be used for church on Sundays and used the next day for carting produce to the markets, in there case it was pigs. In 1933 the design team cut up a sedan and made a frame from wood ( hence there is not many left but a handfull ) as the first attempt at a utility. In 1934 the first ute rolled of the production line .

Ratfink: I can check that out, but how old was the picture? That ph# seems way to short for today and yes your right, there was shitloads brought out until the dollar dropped. Today we've seen this all happen again with the strong Aussie dollar, more on the lines of the 50's up have been coming out.
As we are seeing the Aussie dollar drop again this will slow some imports. Heck we aren't reccession proof here either.

That wrecking yard in Cooma is VERY well known. Nothing much comes out of it. Back in the 50's a lot of our open cars were sent to the US. Dick Scritchfield's Phaeton being one.
I'm X38 on any other sites. [ View ] [ Email ] [ Blogs ] [ Car Ads ] Sydney, Australia
