I'm not competing with Don, but I've started a new project for someone. Seems I have a common theme too - pickups, no floors or subfloors to begin with and "can you make something out of nothing"! This one's going to be a '37 pickup and it started as a 157" wheelbase TRUCK! Some stepup from last year's A model RPU. Anyway the owner cut the frame in 2 and got most of it sandblasted, along with the cab. Now I get to do the rest. Front end is XJ6 Jag, rear leaves and a 9." Engine is a 302 Cleveland (yes, we made 'em) I pulled from one of 2 mid 80's Fairlane the owner has for parts. C4 tranny. Well, this is it so far. I took 52" out of the frame length to begin with.

Oh, and because I can put 5 photos, here's a piece of meat.

Don, I'm still chewin'! Here's the secret though, the owner will be doing all the body fixing once I get the subfloorage sorted out. He also has his own sheet metal shop (stainless commercial kitchens etc)and will make the bed. We'll use a new '37 tailgate. Man that chassis channel is heavy guage, must be 1/4 inch or close! Not like flipping car frames around.

Nice red truck Shine. Nowhere near as common as the 35/6's.

tony, i feel stupid giving you advise but if i dont i'll feel worse. i've done a bunch of old ford trucks and it amazes me how out of square they are. i guess being run down dirt roads does it. just a heads up. i do my floors and stuff with the doors on now.

I do a complete grid of 3/4" 16Ga. or heavier square tubing frame under the floor of all these style pickups that I do. This way I have my seatbelts and everything rigid. Then I make my floorpans out of 16 Ga. and weld them to the grid. I also make a trap door that unbolts in the toeboard on each side so I ccan route my Heat and A/C hoses and wireing much easier and better hidden. Talk about a nice setup. This makes the cab very rigid and safe. Also stops the door "wanders" later on.

Out of square you say Shine? This cab was like a wet roll of toilet paper that got dropped on a concrete floor from 20 feet up. Still is for practical purposes! No way known would the doors fit as it is. After I took out the front cross member and did the frame shortening thing I squared up the frame. The whole thing is drafted on the floor off a centreline. In the bare frame shot you can see the start of the floor subframe, that will be the starting point for truing the cab. It's 35mm square gal which, as luck would have it, is the same thickness as the original wood subframe this cab had. Floor frame will be skinned top and bottom. We don't do frail round here, it won't be wobbly!

Now we have some suspension travel at the back. Yes, it's heavy duty.
