I recently returned to Sears a pair of Craftsman pruning shears we've had for several years as the lock mechanism wore out. Sears replaced them with a made in China pair, they lasted less then 2 weeks. Went back to Sears and could not find a pair that were not made in China, so I got my money back. Went to Lowes who also does not carry any made in USA shears, almost all their shears were also made in China. Bought what I thought were the best they had which were assembled in Mexico with parts made in Taiwan and Vietnam. The only place I've found to get pruning shears made without Chinese or Vietnamese parts is eBay. I recently had problems with my 03 Trailblazer blower motor and replaced a made in Mexico resistor pack with a made in Slovenia unit purchased at Autozone. Unfortunately this inferior garbage has made its way into the Automotive aftermarket industry. I recently read an internet thread on sbc chrome water necks made in China that rust through in a years time. How about Chinese brake rotors and wheels? Its becoming difficult to even find furniture thats made in the USA. I guess this is the end of quality Craftsman tools, as I'm sure they are now are or soon to be made in China as well. I don't know about y'all, but I'm holding out as long as I can with made in the USA products.

You know Gary this is happening more and more. In the wheel market it is really that way but folks like Real Rodders Wheels who make and polish and distribute their products exclusively in America find that folks are looking for cheap and China, Mexico and others offer cheap. I know that we had to quit buying play clothes for my kids at Wal-Mart unless we wash them several times first because they put something on the clothes to protect them for the journey from Honduras or other countries making them. I try to buy American - made in America whenever I can and this includes food, clothing and the most important.....parts for the Chevy.

I replaced the front wheel bearings in the Party Wagon two weeks ago. Living in Charlotte, N.C., home of the Timken Bearing plant, I thought I would do the patriotic thing and buy an American made piece. Went to the local Advance Auto parts store and learned they do not carry Timken Bearings. Went to Auto Zone and they had the correct Timken bearing for my ride. THEY WERE MADE IN ROMANIA!!. I called Timken and learned the local plant does not manufacture that type of bearing in this country. So much for patriotism. The Party Wagon now has new Federal-Mogul front wheel bearings,.....made in China.

Besides half-assed politicians, does this country produce anything worth a damn anymore??

YES, This is all predicated on greed, plain and simple. Wal-Mart is a prime example. Just look at Wal-Marts annual sales in America,Versus the Trade unbalance with China. Funny thing most of the trade deficit is easilly covered by Wal-Mart alone. We consumers want things inexpensive but what we get are things cheap, shody construction whatever.

China has been giving us poor products for years, and we are now just taking heed of it. Several years ago I had brake work done on my Ford Taurus, went thru 3 pairs of front discs before finding a good pair. All except the good ones were made in China. Good ones made in the USA. Now we are learning that China is sending us tainted pet foods and people food and toothpaste. I personally think it is a conspiracy on China's part as a way of getting rid of us without starting a war.

True its getting harder to find parts that are not "off shore" Its hard to compete with cheap labour and no pollution laws. You have to be the quality inspector on anything you buy these days, it is the only way to survive.

as a rod parts store and also very careful about what I sell I find it more and more difficult to buy ANYTHING American made. when I do I stock it. Problem is as SC309 says that our customers won't pay the price for quality!! I hear every day " why I can buy that on Ebay for half of your price!" Never mind that it's a cheap 'knock off' part. We all share the blame for this one. we have let our government put hard working Americans out of business by way of too many rules, laws, taxes and fees. A few years ago the 'experts' predicted that we would soon be a service ecomony rather than a manufactureing one as in the past. Well gang if we don't make it here its coming from some where!! You can't build a high quality anything with cheap parts, period. I'm sure that if things continue as they are now that my store will too meet its demise. I refuse to handle/sell some of that copy-cat crap. We are forced to sell 'over there parts as they are not even made over here anymore. But we watch quality closely. like you guys have said before - buyer beware!!!

I don't really want to get involved in this discussion BUT MOREorles said it all. The reason for all the out sourceing of materials & products is the high wages and benefits that we demand today with our lifestyle. It is no different up here in Canada, I too am guilty of living a lavish lifestyle and I enjoy every minute of it and will continue to do so. I also agree that some/most of the imported products are of questionable quality but with the freedom that we have in our society we have a choice to go somewhere else and look for a better product eg: Germany / or Great Britain.

Thats my .02 worth.

This is not to be taken lightly

In 2006 there was a study that found the average American walks about 900 miles a year.

Another study found that Americans drink an average of 22 gallons of beer a year.

That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles per gallon.

NOW THAT'S AMERICAN QUALITY

Purchased a double flaring tool and a tubing bender from NAPA recently. Both made in USA and both work great.
