My wife and daughters and 2 horses just returned home from Oklahoma with just the muffler baffels the cases were blown off in western Missouri on the way home. Seems sort of funny now but yesterday not so much.

The question is what cased them to explode. The truck is a 79 GMC Crew Cab with a rebuilt (15k miles) 454, RV cam, Edlebrock intake and carb, MSD 6al ignition, accel distributor. No problems until yesterday, temps in the mid 90's running 60-65mph (her story) rpm's in the 27-2800 range.

After having the muffler casings removed she statrted the truck and drove 5 hours home with no problems.

The mechanic who came out suggested bad gas, I thought maybe timing/ignition.

Any ideas?

Jim

It sounds like it stopped firing for a second then came back on. The system loads with full, then backfires. It will destroy the mufflers. It could be in the ignition. I would check the that ignition good before proceeding. Good Luck and just my 2 cents. Don't ask me how I know.

I have had them swell up like a balloon after a backfire before- usually from too much heat and bad gas or ignition hiccup.

Was she in corn country when it happened? Tank full of E85 or gas with a high ethanol content might cause a lean miss, loading the exhaust with un-burnt fuel.

Thanks for all the replys. The tank she was using when they blew is still half full so I'll give it a test run and see what happens.

Well I drove and DROVE IT and it doesn't seem to be the gas, no ignition problems, and the timing hasn't changed. It's starting to look like a string of unfortunate events.

New steel case mufflers going on Saturday.

Thanks agian for all the input.
