My Roadster has a 58' vintage 283 Chevy engine that does not have a harmonic balancer. Just the factory hub. While doing a quick tune yesterday, I noticed a low frequency harmonic vibe between 2 and 3 grand. Would it be wise to...and can you swap the hub for a damper? What worries me is the vibe range is right at highway operating range. Don't wanna break a crank on a long trip. are the crank hubs the same diameter and length?

The 283 crank is the same one used in the 302. Yes you can add a ballancer, but you may have a pulley alignment issuse.

Although I did this on a later model one and it worked, I am assuming the same for 57-68. To know for sure I would check with a company like fluid dampner or maybe even a quick call to summit.

Isn't the hub a press fit? No front bolt. Not sure how well that would fit. Jaws is right on with who I would check with. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

have you checked the flywheel ?? early 283's don't use a balancer asfound on newer engines, they balance via the drilled front hub and the flywheel. I have a '58 283 and have for years with no problems.

I am running a 59 283 with a 57 crank. I have a later model balancer on it--got it from Chevy dealer new--no alignment problems. I did drill and tap the crank so I could bolt the balancer on as added protection. Almost 30,000 miles with no problems

I have a new Goodwrench 350 sitting in the garage, for a friends car. I can take a couple of measurements to see how the pulley alignment works out. It has a Summitt balancer on it. I didn't know that the early motors did not have the crank hubs tapped. Ron,I'm just running a standard flexplate. I'm gonna call summitt and see what they recommend as far as what type of damper to use andwill let you know what they say. I sure appreciate the help!
