I have a 39 ford coupe with Auto Meter gauges. They have worked just fine for the last 7 months since I installed them but the other day the speedo stopped working. It is an eletric one with a sending unit mounted on the trans ( a 2004R GM unit). I know it is getting power because I checked the hot wire to the fuse and the gauge does its sweep when I turn on the ignition. Are the sending units on these tempermental or is there something else I'm missing. By the way the ground is good.

Thanks !

It should be powered when the ignition is turned on. An 8 pulse GM style sender has only 2 wires going to the trans, a hot and a signal. A 16 pulse GM style has 3 wires, a hot a ground and a signal. Check the piece that screws on to the trans and make sure it still has the square drive installed and it is spinning correctly. Another thing to check is the connection at the trans sppedo, obviously checking for a good hookup and not a loose connection or corroded.
The last thing and hopefully not this, but I have had this happen about 5 times, is that the speedo gear thats attached to the output shaft of the trans has broken loose inside the tail housing. It happens when a small clip breaks, thats holds the plastic gear to the shaft. It has 2 small ears that slide between the shaft and the gear, and those ears have a habit of braking, there for letting the plastic gear spin loosely, and not stay attached to the shaft and spin with it. To fix this you have to pull the back of the trans apart and install a new clip. If you found this happened, I can help you with it if needed. Good luck, Bill
