I have replaced dist.in my car and set timning with a lite, tried base at 8-10 and ran like shi- for power compared to before.I also set total at appro 33-34 total with a lite and no help. This car ran great as for power and idle befor I replaced dist due to a problem. On damper there are two markes and I am setting at first mark that comes around since I pulled #1 plug and comp.stroke and that mark lines up.Maybe wrong damper so can I set RPM appro 2500 and just turn dist for fastest running.I have been unable to get car to ping, before I have set until pings and back up till just quits pinging.Any thoughs. Thanks

Do you have the wires in the correct order, with the rotor firing on cylinder number 1 and / or 6, if it back fires real bad when starting, good chance your 180 degree's out, also maybe more octane in your fuel.

Another old way of setting timing is to hook a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold/ or carb. get engine warmed up, then adjust dist. until you find maximum vacuuum, 14-18 is normal for a mild to medium cam, then I back it off just a hair.

Thanks, I tried your way with the vac.gauge and picked up about 5" of vac.and idle and power is now back like before. So I guess markings on damper must be wrong.I did not recheck with a lite to see where marks were. Thanks again,Gene

I cant remember the year, but I know their are 2 different styles of dampners for 350 sbc, and yes the index mark is way different, I think 1-2 inches apart from the original. Also 400 sbc dampners are completely different, you can always tell them because of a recessed lip in the back that is about 6" long. Hope this helps.
