I just started having this misfire and sounds like plug wires crossed.Eng.will pop and backfire thru exhause.I just completed a 2500 mile trip and all was fine and no change has been made to eng.I do find if I disconnect vac.advance hose all is fine.I took out vac. advance and attached to vac.source and it pulls in fine and not leak down.Could it be a cap?It has the electronic dist.with coil in cap.I have run with vac disconnected and all is good as far as backfire.Help

Run on and misfire always usually point to ignition problem. Start with checking the timing, then I would do a new cap and rotor / and new plugs - that could be a cheap fix. Lastly I would change wires. Good luck

Had a similar problem come in a while ago, turned out the coil was only getting 5 volts due to a corroded wire, it would run ok then screw up. I messed with the timing for a while before finding the bad wire.

Thanks to all for suggestions, this car run great by just disconnecting vac.advance.So to me that would elimate the plugs, wires, coil etc.this car also has a crossfire cap and I am wandering about that.I believe when vac.advances it is firing between two cyls.since it back fires and pops thru exhaust.with no vac.run fine.I do know with points and this occurs it was all ways the point settings or replace points. Thanks

Although I myself never used a crossfire type cap, my friend did and had trouble with it. I'd consider going to a stock cap. Just for the ease of replacement during a out of town trip would convince me to change. This aint no answer..........., just my nosey 2 cents worth. Please let us all know what it was, when you do find it. DavyJ has a good point too.....................................................Good luck

You might look at the pigtail wire inside the distributor...it could be broken or the insulation might be damaged. It would seem to me the vac advance is making the dist plate move and that is when you notice the problem...when you disconnect the vac advance the dist plate doesn't move...no problem. Just a suggestion from an old timer.

sounds like the mechanical advance is stuck. Too much advance will make it pop out the exhuast.

I would take a look a at the pick up. they were known to have problems as you have described. and taking the advance away from the dist. would confirm the problem. the vacuum advance is connected to the pick up coil. sounds like its breaking down after it gets hot.

Because under load/ vacuum. The module supplies more voltage to the pick up to componsate for the advance.Do do your know what your base timing is set at right now? or total advance? and at what RPM is the total advance coming in at . If you take your car to a local shop they can hook it up to a scope and tell you in a instant if its your primary or secondary side of your ignition system. But then again you may be right it may be just as cheap to by a new unit.
