Either start shimming, they come with directions, or do what I do. Buy yourself a Nice new GM / Delco starter . usually about $80, I have had good luck with those, and rarely have shimming problems. I use Delco / GM starters to turn over some big H.P. and high compression motors- no problem.
There is a set dimension (starter ger to flywheel gear). The shims are placed bewteen the starter and block. Shim under one side moves the starter gear away from the flywheel and shim under the other side moves the gear closer.
John, I had this problem with my car, do what Bill said (Streetrodder007) put in a new AC Delco, no shims needed, bolt it in and go. Here is a part # for you ( USA 3560) take this number to your local quality parts store I am sure they can cross reference it. I live in New Hampshire and bought mine at Robbins Auto Parts. Here is a link if you need it. www.robbinsauto.com, by the way my motor is a 327 CID, in a 41 Chevy. I know this will work for you, curious to know the outcome, good luck! (dont forget the time change if you go online)
I have had problems with those small high torque starters...I was told that there are two GM flywheels with different number of teeth on each and the starter has to match the flywheel you are using....I went back to a stock GM starter (they vary also) and eventually got good results (with shims)....
Big Al sittin back pickin & grinning in paradise.

Most rebuilt starters come with a few shims and a 1/8 diameter pin. the optimum location for the starter is with the shaft 1/8 away from the teeth on the flywheel.By stacking the shims you get the starter to move closer or further from the teeth.
Still driving the wife's car, cause I am slow.

John, the 3560 starter that I mentioned is for a big block, the word rebuilt scares me when it comes to electrical, there are 2 different flywheels used one has 162 teeth and the other is 154 I believe, not only are the shims a pain to mess with but you have to keep checking the bolts for tightness. you can use a drill bit for the gauge if you use shims, a 1/8" paper clip is pretty big, I dont have any that big. Save yourself a lot of headache sell the mini and purchase a NEW A.C. Delco, you wont be sorry!!
i looked for new a/c delco's nobody has new ones, not even the delco site. anybody know where to buy them? all anybody shows is remanufactured. also thanks guys for all the input.
John, Yes it will, the only difference in the starters is the torque of the starter motor which relates to amperage the mounting location on all chevy V/8's are the same up to the new generation V/8's. I mentioned Robbins Auto Parts in a previous post, here is the 800 number if you want to call them for information 1-800-582-7237. The USA3560 starter I put in my 41 in 2004 Listed for $84.00 I paid $43.22. Make sure you count the teeth on the flywheel. VERY IMPORTANT!!! Question: why would you take an old starter off a 265 and put it on your 350 when the price for a new one is so reasonable. (# teeth on flywheel) to me $43.00 or even $84.00 is worth the peace of mind.
ljwillet. the reason i asked is i have a whole 265 mtr with a starter i know works. really don't want to use. the starter was hung up in flywheel. started the shimming process now but the front half of the starter teeth are worn down, looks like it might be trashed unless i can get a new gear for it. but it was way off. thanks for the ph no if need i starter i will call them. saving the number. where are they located? freight might be a problem.
John, The 265 will make a great boat anchor, as for the starter with the ground down teeth, what are you thinking, bite the bullet and get a new AC DELCO, I know you have parts stores in AZ that have new AC DELCO. I have said it and a couple others said it, JUST DO IT!!! Lenny
i'm going down to napa today to get one. 54 plus core chg and tax. the gear on the mini is a one peice shaft so it would probaly cost more to fix than buy new.jerks me off tho. to have to buy another brand new part. i can't take the mini back as it came with the short block. i think i'm going to use the starter off the 265 for the core charge, can't get 16. for it anywhere else. lol so it's bite the bullet or 2 or 3 or5 bullets. :~) thanks for all the help guys i'll let you know how it turns out. by the way delco does not make new starters, just remans.
ljwillet. i went to napa to get a starter today and ran into a problem. i have a 153 tooth flexplate and the starters have either a 9 or 8 tooth gear, which do i use for the 153 flexplate?
John, I just called Robbins auto parts and he said it didn't matter which one either the 8 or 9 tooth the 9 tooth will spin the motor over faster and if you want more torque use the 8 tooth and the flex plates have either 153 teeth or 168 teeth. let me know!!! Lenny
it was the delco pn 464795. reborn 55 ( ken ) has a buddy at napa and they did research on it. to tell the truth i just installed it and didn't count the teeth. but it works. yea: ~) :~)
I have been following this blog because I knew the time would come when I would make the change back to the Delco starter from a mini. I took the Delco#464795 to my local NAPA store. They have 4 different starters referenced to the number, (all remfd )by different manufacturers....but no Delco. He (the owner) said they can no longer get Delco starters. I also spoke with OReilly with the same results! Johns56, was your starter indeed a Delco. Are these Delcos remfg by others? What am I missing?
there are no more new delco's. they are all remans. some are from delco others from where ever. i don't know why you going to a delco from a mini but there is a site www.db-starteralternator.com/items.st100? that has real good prices. i still had problems with the delco, turns out the flexplate was bad. i rebuilt the pinon gear on the delco and am going to use it. but the mini i have needs a soloniod so i will rebuild it and have a spare if needed. gm also sells a high torque starter ( looks like a delco ) hope this helps. i wouldn't worry to much about the name, the starters are the same looks like to me. the only difference is where you buy them and for how much.
What do you mean there are no more delcos? They are all I sell as far as reman over the counter stuff. I rebuild also, same goes for any starter, generator, alternator, etc..........6volt pos and neg ground systems too.
If you need something from delco and/ or parts to rebuild yours, let me know.

My mini is failing after a very short life. I have other reasons for changing, but too long to explain. Unless some helpful member tells me why I shouldn't, I'll probably purchase the NAPA lifetime warranty version of the Delco 464795.

DO NOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT A NAPA STARTER EVEN FOR A TRACTOR ! junk period. you will wear out the bolts changing them. go to the chevy house and pony up for a good one. same thing for alternators .
dont poke the porchdog........he bites

Usually don't disagree with the porch dog--but I use NAPA all the time and from time to time will have a failure(even get that with genuine GM parts) but overall I recommend them whenever I can. been using them on the ambulances I work on for over 20 years now.
