Wow, I think I just got took, $40.00 for a quart of DP-90 plus $40.00 for the additive. I haven't purchased any paint stuff for 11 years so maybe the prices have just gone up that much.

Any comments on such will be welcomed as I will need more stuff, SOON.

Thanks,

Dale

Dam it tough getting old and listening to When I was your age gas was 25 cents a gallon . LOL and yes time does change and so does everything else. PPG red paint $115.35 a quart and that's no hardner or reducer or clear needed !! Welcome to year 2007

Had my A painted about two years ago. The local PPG distributor is a very good friend of mine so I got all materials at cost. Spent $1107 on filler, primer, paint and clear, plus a few sheets of paper and other miscellaneous items. I got off REALLY lucky and I know it!

I remember when I was about 12 years old gas dropped all the way down to $.75 cents a gallon, the cheapest I ever remember seeing it. That was around 1983.

Damn I'm old!

When I first started driving, gas was around $.23 per gallon. In 1965, when I got my first car (a 56 Chevy), gas was $.25 per gallon around the corner from my house. It was a discount station. My dad would send me there to get him cigarettes which were 4 packs for a dollar. Through the years, there have become a lot more "middle men" that need to get their piece of the pie.

I remember buying cigarettes (for my dad of course) for 23 cents. You'd pay a quarter and there would be 2 pennies inside the wrapper. Don't smoke any more so I'm not sure which has gone up more - gas or cigarettes.

I am firing another new engine this coming weekend, so I bought a case of oil, 2 filters, 12' of AC hose. $103 - seems a little high doesnt it?

I am sure everyone can remember buying a 20 case of round can oil for $20. The kind you had to stab the spout in on each side.

The cheapest I have seen gas was 18 cents a gallon. First time traveling through Iowa in '57, there was a gas war. The next time I saw it for 18 cents was at a Giant gas station in Dearborn, Mich. in the early '60's. Most of the time in the '60's gas was in 23 to 30 cent range. I remember it used to kill me to pay 44 cents a gallon for Sunoco 260 when I wanted to go racing with my '60 Vette.

In April, 1936 my Grandfather drove his family (Grandpa, Grandma, and 5 kids) in a 1923 Studebaker from Cleveland to Santa Monica, CA and he kept a detailed diary and accurate log of expenses of the 12 day trip. It's great fun to read with the dirt roads, dust storms, flash floods, break-downs. Reads like a movie script. Here are his expenses for April 24 from Rolla, Missouri to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Breakfast (7 people) - $1.75

Gasoline 5 Gal. - $0.82

Gasoline 7 Gal. - $1.13

Oil 1 Quart - $0.25

Food & drinks (7 people) - $0.85

Gasoline 8 Gal. - $1.52

Supper (7 people) - $1.50

Cottages (lodging) - $2.50

And he thought that was very expensive!

For the flames on the 39' Ford I am finishing, we used Dupont Hot Hues Chromillusion- KK720 Pure Fire Prizm B/C. What a deal at $3200 a gallon. Thats expensive. We only needed 2 ounces for airbrushing, but the minimum buying amount was 1 pint for $415. plus I bought 3 other colors for drop shadowing and flame tips and blends. turned out great!

LEON, have you ever used Hot Hues yet? Expensive but the results are incredable. I am glad I paid a top airbrush guy for the flames, I would hate to waist any of this material.

Yes, I've used them, very cool line of colors, The top color of the two tone of my 55 Hardtop is a Hot hues color, The bottom color is going to be a very dark blue and the top is the new Desert Pearl that came out last year. Im still debating exactly how I want to dress up that 502 and the engine bay. I really don't want to do any kind of engine cover, I really want it to be something impressive looking but very clean

I remember gas at 15 cents and got down to a nickle during a gas war.... mid 50's in Mississippi....I remember my dad had a silver dollar and once in awhile he would have to pawn it to the gas station for gas... the owner would always hold it for him till payday cokes were a nickle, hamburgers were a dime... course we didn't make but maybe $40 a week....

In 1963, as I was cruising the streets in my 56 Ford Crown Vic gas was a whopping 24 cents a gallon. I can remember one fine Sunday I was running real low on the stuff and was able to slip into a Sinclair station to get a couple of gallons to get me home. Only had 1 silver dollar, so I got 4 gallons of gas, enought to make it home..... even in my gas guzzling Ford. Owner of the station held my silver dollar until I came back the next day to give him a paper dollar. Every once in while the stations on that same street would have a little gas price war. Gas would drop temporarily down to about 16 cents per gallon and every body would stop for gas, even if they didn't need it.

Got gas this weekend.... cheapest place was $2.83....... times sure have changed.....but so have I. Unfortunately.

Please,..............don't get me goin on how much RED paint cost a gallon.

With some minor body work, labor and materials to prep this car, plus the finished paint, clearcoat, materials and labor, the Party Wagon facelift was over $6K.

I sure hope my wife doesn't read this thread or the Party Wagon might be a motor home.

$6000 is a very realistic price for alot of body work and a good paint job with quality materials. Plus your reds, blues, yellows and other multi mix colors cost alot more than a basic black or fleet white. Even with me doing all the work, I still get $1500 to $3000 invested just into body materials. No tools or labor!

Right now I would like to buy a new board sander, but I dont want to spend the $200 for a decent one.

Just bought a pint of lacquer for $46.00. Seems a little excessive but its becoming harder to find as not many suppliers even carry the stuff anymore. You either pay it or go without.

Gman - sure beats the hell out of the cost of a pint of HOK Chameleon. My next paint job might be done with house paint, especially if I am on SS by then. ;-)

blksheep - what's it worth to you not to have the little woman find out???? ;-)

Orphans, no way I would consider HOK Chameleon as I don't care for it even if I could afford it. You must be in the same boat with lacquer I am with your 57 unless its been repainted in BC/CC. Only one supplier in the Louisville area even carries lacquer. Sometime in the near future we'll all be using water base paint. The Ford Truck Plant in Kentucky is already spraying it. House paint a roller may be the thing of the future.
