Always like to check out the cars for sale, just can believe the dollar amount people are asking for their rods. Is it just me or does it seem over the top. Reading in Street Rodder the auctions are taking a down turn on the dollars the cars are selling for. Don't want to offend anyone but some of these prices are nuts.

it's a flooded market in the 25 to 30k range, cost of parts is going thru the roof . streetrods dont do well at auctions. some will , some wont . lot of cars out there at .50 on the dollar. streetrods at bj this year were 10k low in my opinon.

I'm with ya. We've all met guys with a For Sale sign in the window for $80K for an otherwise $30K car. I think it's a case of "I know what it's really worth but if you're willing to pay that much it's all yours!".

Either that or the wife hates the car, told the husband to sell it so he's just pacifying her with an astronomical price while she may have no real concept of the actual value of the car. I think that happens more often than we realize.

Then again there's the whole ego thing where a guy knows what he paid in retail for parts, considers himself an expert, and figures if he paid himself a reasonable $50 per hour that '32 highboy must be worth $100K.

Prices have been over the top for a few years, but the only people who get the asking price would appear to be the "name brand" builders. One who's quality and reputation are established. Others see what there asking and copy the price without knowing why one car is of a higher value.

It may be a good thing, if cars were too cheap, everyone would have one!

i think one aspect that has been overlooked is the dealer`s part in the price spiral. dealer is probably the wrong term for them, since they don`t. they seem to buy a "joe average" rod off the street or at auction, add a couple nice features and want to make profit on the shop time and pull in 3-5k profit on the end product as well. three ago at goodguys in columbus, my friend`s and i marveled at joe dilkes gorgeous silver 1937 ford pickup.i believe it was valued at 125k at that time. two years later it was for sale at89k , now at 69.9k. who builds a rod to lose 55 thousand dollars?

BigAl wrote...."I know a lot of cars turn over on this site... we assume they sold since we don't get involved...."

BigAl, my question is Why Not? I would think that info would be very important factor in generating sales of your car selling services for the site. You should have an "exit" form to be completed by each person who signs up to sell their car. The info should include ....did they sell, were they satisfied with the sale, did they take the vehicle off because it did not sell, and then a section on comments and site improvement recommendations.

That info should help you fine tune the car listing part of the site and also offer incentive for people to list their vehicles here. If the info is negative you can keep to yourself, but I doubt that would be the case.

Mudman ---

Who put the value on it?

The owner or the builder?

You know there is an ole sayin in this industry--

If ya want to make a small fortune, start off with a big one.

I myself, do this for the fun and the people. If i make a few bucks thats a plus.

We all want a bargain on everything. This website has dozens of bargains if you analyze what it costs to duplicate the cars. My approach to buying is to find what I want and then make a realistic offer. A car is only 'worth' the asking price when a buyer hands you the cash. Until then it's just another car for sale. The used market prices are set by owners trying to get all their money back, and those who want to move on and know that recovering every penny of their 'used' investment is probably unrealistic. Last summer I sold both of my cars for about two-thirds of their build cost. But since they were 'drivers' I got what I expected.

orphans2, we have that exact process in place. when you "delete" an ad, you are asked the selling price, whether or not our service was helpful, whether you'd recommend our service and finally we offer a suggestion field to tell us anything additional regarding the site.

It's true that a lot of cars are way over priced, but the RIGHT ones are still bringing good money. The cost of building a high quality car is very expensive and buyers for high end cars know that. But it seems that there are a lot of cars out there at $50k+ that I wouldn't pay half of that for. Some of these cars simply won't sell and sellers will be frustrated because they can't get rid of them.
