If you haven't heard as yet Mr. Robert Peterson, founder of HOT ROD Magazine and Motor Trend has died. Haveing met Mr Peterson and having had the pleasure of hearing him relive some good and rough times I feel a greater sense of loss. He was one among few. His passion and devotion to his dreams and love for the automobile was second to none. Though he amassed an empire through his publications and investments he remained an inspiration to one and all by being himself.

Few men alive or not have effected the hot/street rod world has did Mr Peterson. It is doubtful that one could find ten people in the U.S. that haven't heard of or read one of his magazines. The very title of "Hot Rod" is known around the world. In his 80 years here with us he taught us, inspired us, and probably dared a few us us to achieve our own automotive dreams. He leaves behind some very large shoes that may never be filled again.

Very well put RONHOTROD. Mr Peterson will be missed by many. I have also had the pleasure of spending some time with him over the years. A true Gentle Man. Rest in peace Bob.

I loved his stories about how it was back when he started.... a pioneer in the truest sense... RIP Mr. Petersen...

Here's the rest of the story.... Publishing magnate Robert Petersen dies

LOS ANGELES: Robert E Petersen, the publishing magnate whose Hot Rod and Motor Trend magazines helped shape America’s car culture and who gave millions to a museum dedicated to his passion, has died. He was 80.

Petersen died Friday of complications from neuroendocrine cancer at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, said Dick Messer, director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

“Mr. Petersen helped create and feed the American obsession with the automobile, delivering gasoline-powered dreams to the mailboxes of millions,” Messer said.

Petersen, the son of an auto mechanic, founded Hot Rod magazine in 1948 while trying to promote the custom-designed car show at the Los Angeles Armory. The following year, he launched Motor Trend for automobile enthusiasts.

A dozen other specialty consumer magazines followed, including Guns & Ammo, Sport, Motorcyclist, Hunting, Mountain Biker, Photographic, Teen and Sassy.

By the time his publishing empire was sold in 1996, Petersen Publishing’s annual revenue was about $275 million. ap
