I value all opinions on this subject. I am ready to paint a streetrod (1954 Willys Aero). I have all of the bodywork done and have the car primed, blocked and ready to shoot. I have painted before with single stage Delton black, color sanded. polished, and had great results. My choice for this car is a metallic finish. I don't have conditions that are considered "professional" in the the area of a paint booth, but fairly decent. If I understand previous postings, single stage metallic cannot be color sanded and polished because of the effect it has on the metallic particles in the paint. Is this true? If so, am I correct in presuming that I should use a base coat/ clear coat if I want a metallic finish that I can color sand? I want a good paint job but want one that is reasonably priced and relatively easy to apply. Thanks!

Hi, I'm not a pro when it comes to paint but i will say this,Ther are a lot of publications out there that deal with current issues onpaint my suggestion is to try your local bookstore,or the "web",or all the other mag's out there. It sounds like you have a great start on a very different car I hope it all comes together for you,and I hope I've been some help

I am partial to PPG -DBC base coat clear coat systems, not much on the DBU ( you cannot put unused paint back in the can.)
Bright heavy metallic's are a little harder to shoot, I think you need to pay more attention to overlap, so you do not go too heavy on 1 swipe / pass, because you will stripe the vehicle. I have made this mistake, and I could see it through the clear. it stood out at me. its a whole nuther animal than shooting say a Fleet White single stage- Concept.

Since your not in a down draft paint booth, something I always do is sweep the floor real good without the car in there, then I wipe my spray hose down so I dont drag dust around, and then spray the floor down lightly with cool water.
I also never paint in the evening, I have had too many problems with bugs crawlin through my wet paint, that really pisses me off ! If I get small runs, I chase a little extra spray behind them after my 2nd or 3rd coat.
Good luck, lots of guys have little tips like this that we can all pick up.

you can use any base under the spi universal clear. it is very user friendly and cost is good. it will out perform ppg or dupont in every aspect. when you get the color on let it flash good and then do a dust coat to even the met. do not get too heavy with the first coat of clear and give it plenty of flash time.

Yo Doss. good luck, I, too like the PPG paint have had good luck with it. Whatever you do, do not use Matrix paint or any other product. I paid a man huge money to paint a car with it, and it came loose after only 2 seasons. I approached them at a show, they came out looked at my ride, and promptly called it an "application problem" I did some checking up, and it seems that 5 other guys in my area with 5 different colors, applied by 5 different shops, at 5 different times of the year, have all had the same problem. Coincidence I guess? Anyway no cooperation from them in any of the cases.

9 times out of 10 adheasion problems are not product related. almost always caused by poor prep by the painter. many times a paint shop will not use a sealer . i use epoxy on bare metal and for sealer before paint. matrix is a ppg clone. even the numbers are the same. i have tried it and got the same dieback problems i get with ppg. the spi i have used had 0 shrinkage or dieback.

Mixing paint system products is not a good idea. In fact it is a terrible idea. The first clue is the concept of "system." Things that supposedly are known to work well together.

D oss I have painted with PPG and always use epoxy primers. I always take it down to the shiny metal. Its a must. Have painted several and touch up on a hood that matched perfect. (Got lucky).. Good luck take your time. By the way I used to live in Loganville.
