Has anyone had any experience with the shop smithy 3 in 1 lathe, mill, drills. I may have a chance to pick one up fairly reasonable. Thought it might be handy for some of the small machine work jobs on project cars. Any opinions pro or con? Thanks

A friend of mine stored his low end model at my house for a year and I got to use it for various small jobs. The drill I didn't use because I had a stand alone drill press but the mill/lathe were VERY useful. How many times have yu had to drill two holes in a piece of metal then cut out the area between them for a slotted hole? Done in no time with the mill and looks much better. Made many parts with the lathe too. The small size and limited swing over the bed was fustrating at times. Would have liked to had the larger one with power cross feed. If I were younger I would spring for one of my own. Of course I build alot of my stuff rather than buy.

A Shopsmith can be a very handy tool. The only disadvantage is that on a project the machine must be reconfigured for every operation change unlike stand alone tools. BUT if the price is right they are a space-saving setup that makes many one-off jobs easier.

I don't have one, but if the price was reasonable I cannot see how anything that has those capabilities would be anything but an asset.

BTW, the one I used was the bottom of the line model and to move it you removed the motor head unit and then got your best strong friend to help you lift the bed. It takes two for the SMALL model, don't know how many for the larger ones. There is some "slop" in the unit that with proper adjustment can be minimized but then we are not building rocket ships here. Go to the Smity siteand see the add on goodies that you will be buying!!!!!

Any tool that you have is better than the one you don't. If the price is right don't let it get away.

I would love to have one of these in my shop.

Thanks for the input. I was able to buy it for about 60% of what a new one would cost. I'll be making a road trip to Conn. to pick it up.
