I recently installed a front suspension from Hiegts on a 1957 chevy pickup. The package includes a power rack from a 1980-84 thunderbird and we are using a p/s pump on a sbc. The local hotrod shop sold me an adapter kit that uses a fitting that changes the Ford type fitting to a AN-6. From the moment I started the truck the high pressure fitting leaked. The shop sent me a couple differnt styles of adapters but they all leaked. I eventually tightened one of the adapters too much and stripped the threads in the rack. So I purchased another from the local NAPA store along with a factory type p/s hose. I then had a local hose shop build me a custom hose using the end of the factory unit to adapt to the pump. It almost worked, the leak is small. But it still leaks. the customer expects me to fix it. I am out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Thanks

check the ports in the rack....if memory serves, there are a couple of small adapters that should have come with the napa rack to allow flare fittings to be used where a factory o ring style fitting was originally. Adapter looks kinda like a brass mushroom.

Check to see if the receiving/ female hole in the rack is a 37 degree or 45 degree seat.

One thing that may be possible is you might be over tightning the O-ring fitting, Its easy to damage the O-ring

Deja Vu...................I chased a similar problem for months.......I finally bought a P/S hose kit from "gotta show".....It worked.....But I still have steering that is WAY TOO quick......I've added a restrictor valve from RB's...it helped...then added more shims to that unit...helped a little more, but still to quick...I really dont want to go back to manual steering but I AN considering it. I too, am using a early Chevy pump.

Thank you guys for your comments. I did try the small "mushroom adapters", they did not seem to fit anything. They did not fit into the bottom of the input port and stuck up so high that there was no room for thread contact. I must be missing something there. The factory type fitting works on a different principal. There is an "O" ring on the inside that pushes back into itself at the bottom, and a nylon (?) type of seal at the top of the fitting that seals the top. It feels kind of weird because even when it is intalled the hose is free to swivel in the socket. And, maybe I am a little gunshy about tightening it too much, I don't want to buy another rack. Someone told me that the Chevy pump just puts out too much pressure for the Ford rack. The customer likes the feel of the steering, I would hate to have to change that, but maybe that is the answer.

I really appreciate your input, Thanks again

I have used an early Chevy pump before and found that if I took the fitting off the back of the pump and cut the spring down, that it helped lower the pressure and made things work withlower pressure. Just a thought.

Gotta Show makes up hoses to correct the exact problem you are encountering. A friend of mine just corrected the same problem with some Gotta Show hoses.
