First off, its definately been done, ive seen the rod on a series called "Rides" on TLC. Considering how light these cars are too, jst imagine all those g's at accelaration. But dont let this get you down build one anyway. Also, i thought, take it a step further, rather than all time 4-wheel drive, go for part 4-wheel drive, but also the ability to go into rear-wheel only drive, for those smokey burnouts.

Summit built the quad deuce years ago , then had Trepanier re-do it since it looked wrong with 4 wheels all the same size. With all the SUV's out there ......some drive train should be easy to modify.

I would imagine an awd street rod would come in real handy in Maine. Especially since your summers don't start until July and are over by September.

Only conversion I've seen around my way was on a 55 Chevy. It ended up with about a 13 inch ground clearance and looks kinda of dumb. But if you can do one right it could be a terrific car. Like mating a 32 3w with a Ford 500 chassis. Cool.

Wow this thing started in August of 2004! Just in case anyone is wondering, the Quadradeuce ran a hot SBC coupled to a 700R4 with a GMC Syclone transfer case. I used to know what they used for the front and rear axles, but can't remember now. It was 4-wheel independent though. Neat car! Would love to flog it around town for a day or three... until I got arrested.

Wait, they have to CATCH you to arrest you, right?

Why 2 or 4? With power plus light weight just smoke all 4. Go for it!

Very simple, get a GMC Typhoon and use everything but the body. My wife's Typhoon is the same wheelbase as my 1936 Huppmobile and will match a lot of late 30's - early 40' cars. I saw a 37 or 38 Chev coupe in the mag's a while back that was perfect with the whole setup. For those who don't know, the Typhoon is super quick. It is still the quickest SUV out there, instead of spinning the tires on a take off it will instantly put 3 car lengths down on an IROC, Corvette, or Mustang. They spend all their time playing catch-up. Very superior braking system, rear seat passengers often come into the front seat if not strapped in. Worth a look...

I built the chassis for the coupe mentioned by scooting above. It was a 38 Chevrolet and it used a GMC Sylcone chassis that was heavily modified. Though the wheelbase was close, the engine had to be moved back about 11 inches for the front axle to be in the right place and the engine to fit under the hood. The fenders were also widened to fit over the stock wheels. It was also converted to coil-overs on the front because the torsion bars could not be used. I also built a custom 3-link suspension for the rear to replace the leaf springs. It ran hard and handled well. but not an easy conversion.

Wow! aosborn you are my hero. That was such a slick looking car and done so well that I would have never thought you had to go to that much work. Really would like to see and hear about it. Wife's Typhoon is still in the garage, I keep daydreaming. Trouble is, it has been a wife's car all it's life and not beat on like most, still stone stock and showroom beautiful, so I can't cut it up. But I would like to hear more about yours. We, too, are moving soon and may have to reduce the rolling herd. Hate to see that happen.

Thank you for your interest, I and the other fabricators at the shop had quite a time making it all happen. It was built in the early ninetys at Hot Rod Enterprises in Auburn Wa, for a customer out of the Portland area. He owned a large company and one of his employees had this 38 Chev that had been in his family for years. It came out of Minnesota I think, was bone stock and had been sitting for quite some time. We actually got it running and drove it around the shop complex before tearing it apart. He purchased a totaled Syclone pickup with about 10k miles for the conversion. It took well over a year to complete and was featured in many magazines of the time, Street Rodder, Turbo High Performance, Super Chev etc. We used the stock dash pod and all the electronics, ABS etc. It had a one-off grille built in house, custom hood, wider fenders, handmade running boards, all new firewall and floor to cover the drivetrain. The frame was a mix of the Syclone front section and the original 38 from roughly the firewall back. It was very strategically stiffened with x-bracing for torsional rigidity and to support the three link rear suspension and the complex drivetrain. With the engine set so far away from the front axle, we had to have built a custom tubular driveline from the transfer case. When I tested it the first time with an original style solid shaft driveline and got on it hard, the front end felt like it was coming unglued from the vibration of that heavy driveshaft! At the time we finished it we believed it was the first all wheel drive streetrod to hit the street. The Quadra-duce was under construction but was not finished yet.

aosborn,.......I too, like scooting, have been a big fan of that black '38 coupe since the 1st time I saw it. What a perfect blend of old and new, including ABS brakes. At the time, I was employed by GMC and very fimiliar with the Syclone and Typhoon AWD Suv's. (FYI,..the concept was a spinoff of an earlier Pontiac 6000 AWD sedan model) I still often have the pix of that '38 in my thoughts. The grille and chromed stock Syclone wheels added a distinctive look. So, if you ever wondered if anyone ever appreciated your efforts on that car, wonder no more. Great job on a beautiful car.

Please post some pix when you can...........
