Friend of mine recently got a 50 chevrolet Bel Air hard top project . He wants to build a 235 with some speed equipment and adapt a th 350 transmission . The kicker is he wants to keep the stock front crossmember and center point steering but he wants power steering . NO RACK AND PINION . He has a Saginaw 800 and a 605 box ( regular rotation ) . The box is going to be mounted on it's side on top of the frame with the pitman arm pointed down . Don't think these boxes will work . I think he needs a reverse rotation saginaw 800 box but we don't know what car , van or whatever it comes out of . I know there are some kits out there but he can fabricate his own brackets . He owns a machine shop . Help appreciated . . . . . Gordon

Take a look at the 70's and/or 80's Chevy 4X4's.  The steering gear was mounted forward of the front axle with a drag link running back to the left front wheel.  Not sure if the rotation was reversed or not but with the forward mounting it may have been.

Thanks , Stude .   I think I saw somewhere that some of the 50's Studebakers had basicly the same  center point steering as the  49-54 Chevroets and the  53-62 Corvettes .      Will definetly look into the 4X4's .    I imagine some of the Studebaker guys have done this swap .     I'll look at some of their forums .

Yes it is .     We found out  that  some , but not all,   of the Astro/Safari vans  have reverse rotation plus the ones You and Stude mention  .   This one is a salvage yard box .   He got it cheap  .     at least he's got a core .  If the rack piston and worm is ok and the bore is not scarred up too bad I can rebuild it for him  .  0-rings , seals , bushings , etc .

    Thanks for the help . . . . .  Gordon
