I'm like Bob, I'll be there the week before. I'm going up to Chattanooga to spend a few days with my son and brother, then we're headed up to PF for the Shades of the Past. Have a safe trip Jim.

I'm going to Shades the week before....and guys if you are there for Shades don't miss the Dixie Gas swap meet just east of Sevierville. All petroliana kinda stuff. 15 mins from Pigeon Forge  http://dixiegas.homestead.com/

For hotels, if you aren't too concerned with staying in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg rates aren't as pricey (for once) ....but there's that traffic thing.......

I'm with the others,  going to the Shades,  wouldn't miss it,  can't afford to stay for the Grand Run, unfortunately.   We are staying in Sevierville,  it seems a little cheaper and not too far from everything.  Don't know how the new show site is going to work out,  hope they have the traffic problem under control.

Have been going to both for years. I live about 1:45 min away, easy drive in the rod. Just get up early about 5:30 and no traffic. Park on the street some where. Only been to the Grand show one time and probably won't go back. The street is where its all hapening and makes for a nice 4 mile walk.. Do the same for the Shades but this year may have the new 33 Pontiac finished for the Shades. If not will drive the 46 Ford ragtop. 2 fantastic weekends if you enjoy excersize and cars. Shades has moved to new location . It will be a Dollywood Splash country.. Should be much better and lest mud and dust. Depends on the weather.

I might just do that Jim- we usually go down on labor day and stay that week of the shades- i think I might go and stay the week between em- we started staying at that royal inn when it was brand new maybe 15?yrs ago. I dont think they cleaned it well since then lol - Its like 30 bucks a nite then goes to 100 on the show weekends

Yo Dixie...if you guys can get a bunch together I'll find you a nice log cabin in Pigeon Forge and you can share the thing for the week. It's much cheaper and you can cook out on a grille, etc......many more options than if you're in a motel room. When you calculate the price per person you can stay in a cabin much more reasonably than a motel. Some are less than 2 miles off the parkway, and are in much better shape. Some folks like the parkway traffic.....I have no idea why...... just offering if you might be interested. I did it for some friends 2 years ago and they stay in the same place every year, to me it's a no brainer..........Inspector

Hey, does anyone have any updated info on the construction in and around Sevierville and Pigeon Forge? I was there in May and was just wondering how bad it was now. We're trying to do a little trip planning before Shades. Thanks! Jaybird

Dixie, go to VRBO.com and search Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg cabin rentals. They are pretty nice and cheaper then a lot of motels who jack up the prices on show weekends.

Bob...hate to break it to you, but that feller must be sniffin' somethin' cause there are at least a thousand barrels between Sevierville and Boyds creek road (3 miles). My son is a cop, and they have scheduled 12 hour shifts in anticipation of the Labor Day traffic, and also for the rod runs. I'll let you know what's up next week. It's some better, but way far from good. BTW highway 441 from Knoxville (Chapman Highway ) has a bridge down to one lane at Tarwater. 20 minute delays last weekend. Jay if you can tell me what you're thinking about doing, maybe I can find a few back roads to get you around the traffic....sorry guys we have idiots for highway planners in this state....UNBELIEVABLE

Dave I was thinking about coming in to the Dandridge or Newport exits instead of Hwy66. We'll be getting there sometime Thursday morning. Our condo is actually in Gatlinburg so I can't leave the car for the weekend on the strip. Sounds like we'll be doing a lot of Rally racing on the backoads to get from A to B. I think they have a Duece area Sat. I plan to park there. I'll keep an eye out for ya'll

I got to visit the Rod Run, don't own one myself but love getting to see them in Pigeon Forge. Hey, I work for a local company and would love to hear any stories any of you have! We have a blog (pigeonforgetncabins.com ) and would love to get some good Rod Run stuff up on there. By the way, who won the shades of the past rod giveaway?
