I have the chance to buy a known 700R from a friend. This transmission was in a built 32 Ford with a 383 Roller and 4:11 gears. It has been in the car from day one, and has worked fine for 5 years. Talking with him about this, he said it had no 12 volts for the lockup. So it has to be locking on pressure I assume. Somebody tell me how this works, and is this a good bad or ugly way to do it.

Will a 700R lock up from pressure?
i don't think so.. i could be wrong.
I didn't think it would either, but the darn thing works and has no 12 volt wires going to it...?
My 200r was setup internaly to shift that way if I remember correctly
Sure, 12 volts will lock the convertor....at any speed. Pull up to a light, forget to unlock = smoke.
Ever since Ron Francis came out with the TC-70, adjustable mini-module, I will ONLY use it.
No problems, no fun with Street Rods, Jim
Brian - help us out here. I think his converter has not been locking - which would generate extra heat, but with a small light car and 4.11 gears, probably not enough to hurt anything. I don't think a 700R4 will lock on pressure, and I think it will only lock in 4th. Do I have that right?
Just to let you know my local trans shop did mine like that with no 12v switch hooked up. I had the vacum one and he said its not working and didnt need it. Not sure if he did something different with the square plug with the wires on the side of trans. So far 2000 miles on trans and no issues. Ken
I'm siding with Robert E , on this one but , Brian's the man . This transmission stuff fascinates the H--- out of me . I'm learning more and more from all these posts . From what I gather the 200 and the 700 both have lock up solenoids that need 12 volts to cause the converter to lock up . I understand Art Carr has some setups that don't use a lockup torque converter and wouldn't need all this lockup stuff . Mainly for racing , I guess . If I'm wrong tell me so . I'm here to learn .
SuperiorTransmissin products makes a hydraulic lockup valve conversion for the 700R4. If i remember correctly there were some early 700's that came this way from the factory. They sell it under the Fairbanks name part number K017. Ezstreet, you may have a coverted trans. http://www.superior-transmission.com/2008.catalog/SUPERIORcatalog08.pdf
Jaybird....very interesting, this may be the answer. I know the original builder of this 32, so maybe he can tell me who did the transmission work. The transmission works perfect, I just want to know what is going on with it and no back yard rigging has been done.
After looking at the K017 , I believe Jay nailed it .
Lew......and your application is ????

Jim....34 Ford ( 2550 lbs ) ZZ1 350/345HP, 9 inch 3:23 ratio ( have 3:90 gear set ). I talked with Phoenix transmission about this, and they say that an internal hydraulic lock up does exist and not anything new. They said that it will usually lock up someplace between the 2nd and 3rd shift. This transmission also comes with a 2800 stall converter that has been in the car with the same transmission. I'm not sure that 2800 is good for street use, but will vary depending on the weight of the car and other factors. Phoenix did say that the preferred way was to use the 12 volt system, and have the converter to lock only in fourth gear. Now why that is I don't know, and should have asked why but didn't. I would think you would want it to lock under normal operating, isn't that one of the purposes of a locking converter .....limited slipping, less heat buildup better mpg ?
You would think it would but everone has an opinion. I like a few guys here liked the 200 r better. I have had both-the 700- had too low of a first gear and had to lock it up-the 200r was a wider split and was all hyd without a lockup. It would give you whiplash under full power and was a true 4 speed sound.
Yep, Bigdude, 700 has the lowest first gear of any automatic ever made........I love it !!
Lew....my engine of choice since 1957 = 283/283, 327/340, up to today's ZZ4 crate engines. In '86, bought a wrecked Iroc with a 700. Put engine & 700 in our '33. Now over 72,000 miles around the USA......still goin' like it did when it left Detroit. The 5000 pound '35 Packard got a 502/502/700R4 6 years ago. Otherwise ZZ4/700R4/3.70 rear in most other rods. I have used a Ron Francis TC-70 mini-module for lockup ever since they came out. Jim, School of Hard KnocksJim
